A Guide To Strength Tests Performed For Fresh Concrete

May 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 205

Concrete testing is normally done to check properties of a particular specimen of concrete. There are several tests which can be performed at job sites as well as in laboratory to check concrete strength. Concrete being a critical structural element, it is mandatory for construction companies to document concrete test results.

Various tests are nowadays performed both on concrete which is freshly mixed as well as on hardened concrete to check whether they meet the required quality standards. In the next few sections we will look at some of the common questions related to testing of concrete strength which commonly arise.

What is the purpose of these tests?

There are different tests which are performed to know if contents of concrete as claimed by manufacturer actually exist. The tests provide a way to know about permeability as well as durability of the material being tested. These tests are vital in high stress constructions such as tall buildings & bridges and make sure that the material used will be safe and be able to withstand required stress.

Which tests are commonly performed in case of fresh concrete?

Fresh concrete test commonly includes air content, compressive strength, slump and unit weight test. Let us briefly look at these tests:

  1. Slump Test: It helps to measure consistency as well as concrete's relative flowing ability. In case it is seen that flow is not proper in concrete because of slow slump then it would create problems in right consolidation of concrete. On the other hand if flow does not stop because of high slump then also it is a problem and would result in loss of mortar from formwork, result in delay in finishing and create pressure inside formwork.
  2. Air Content Test: This test is used for checking the volume of air present in any concrete sample. There are generally 3 field tests used as part of air content test namely; pressure meter, volumetric method & chace indicator test.
  3. Unit Weight Test: This test helps to know whether the weight of fresh content is as per required standards or not.
  4. Compressive Strength Test: In this method cylinders of fresh concrete are poured & force required for breaking concrete cylinders is measured at defined intervals while the fresh concrete hardens.

A Final Note

Thus as conclusion we will say that testing concrete for strength is necessary and ensures that constructions are safe and would be able to bear stress for several years without causing any problems.
