Wireless Intercom Systems, Are They Secure?

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 103

Wireless intercom systems have two major benefits over their wired counterparts. Firstly they tend to be much easier to setup and install because there are no pesky wires to try and run through your home or office. Secondly because there are no wires holding them down the intercom units are portable and can easily be moved from room to room, or if they are battery operated can even be carried with you as a radio.

Wireless intercoms can be installed in a typical home or office very quickly and will usually start operating as soon as the units have power supplied to them be it via batteries or power adapters. The only major downsides to wireless intercoms over wired is the risk of interference in your home or office distorting, blocking or scrambling the wireless intercom signals.

The second risk with wireless intercoms is the threat of potential strangers or nosey neighbors eavesdropping with scanners, baby monitors or other wireless equipment operating on the same frequency and channels as your wireless intercom systems.

In North America there are a few common frequencies which different wireless devices use. These frequencies are 59MHz, the MURS MHz and FM frequencies between 200KHz and 270KHz, 2.4GHz, 5.8GHz and 900 MHz.

Lower end wireless devices which do not generally need long ranges or need to be super secure operate on the 49MHz frequency. Devices such as baby monitors, inexpensive cordless phones etc. would be examples of these. This is the least secure of all wireless frequencies and the most likely to experience interference (because it is so common). No wireless intercom systems would use this frequency.

Intercoms which operate on the FM band do exist but are uncommon. Frequencies within the FM band are prone to interference from electrical devices such as stoves, televisions etc. and so it is not generally a great choice for home or office wireless systems, conversations are also insecure with anybody being able to dial into your station.

The 900MHz frequency is available only in North America, Australia and Israel. Most modern wireless intercom systems operate on this frequency today using a transmission style which is called "digital spread spectrum". This transmits the wireless signal over several frequencies helping to ensure privacy.

Most wireless intercom systems would not sure the 2.4MHz band but there are several wireless video intercom systems which take advantage of the band. The only downside to operating on this frequency is that it tends to be the same frequency as cordless phones and wireless routers. However both the phones and routers are widely available now in the 5.8GHz band which would solve this problem immediately.
