Stop Here and Then Gently Pass

In the big city of Mumbai, where millions of people stream into, from all over India, hope in their heart, enthusiasm in their gait, determination in their eyes of making it big. It is the City of dreams in India.

The chaos, filth, squalor, noise and crowds at first glance, overawe you, create panic and tension. Hey wait a minute; that's only for a few weeks or months, you then begin to see the madness in the method and method in the madness. Underneath the chaos is a kind of orderliness and discipline. The show business, corporates, media and advertising, food, malls, kirana merchants, the swank cars to the humble chawls, everything co-exists. Each one has a space in the landscape of the city called Mumbai.

This eternally pulsating city which never sleeps also has its dark and seamy underbelly, which is stress. Stress takes its toll, as you need to fight and compete for a seat in the Government bus, Train, footpath, hotels, residential space. The pollution and long commute for office and business in fact takes a heavy toll on the mental and spiritual health of its population.

Insomnia, irritability, flying off the handle, road rage, suicide, accidents, depression, feelings of worthlessness, panic, rage, difficulty in communications, aggression, impatience, cold and unemotional interactions, are the order of the day and it requires one Mumbaikar (meaning one who resides in Mumbai) to understand another Mumbaikar. The average Mumbaikar is socially unsocial, does not believe in small talk, chatting, spending time pottering around flowers or plants, feeding the birds, taking a nap, generally lazing around, smelling the roses, listening to the chirping of the birds, smiling at a child, explaining patiently to a little one who seeks a doubt.

What does this all add up to; you guessed it, it is a City living on the edge, as if there is no tomorrow. Frightening is it not?. It has no time for the dying or the dead, the infirm and the sick, have to figure out their own ways to manage. The mad rush and pace of the city dulls emotional responsiveness and sensitivities. I am a human robot, all feelings and sensitivity gets dulled and i actually do not feel pain nor pleasure, as there is a coating which prevents emotions from percolating inside. I have to conform to the requirements which are thrust at me and learn to abide.

Yet having said all of it, i confess this City holds a peculiar charm and charisma, you kind of get addicted to it. For those like me, who need quietitude and peace, we find our small crevices in this mammoth city, pockets of green, small hilllocks, small patches of forest area, a quite corner, to stop and smell the roses, sit and do nothing, think about nothing, feel contended, smile at a passerby, raise the hat or wave at a passing neighbour, reminiscence about the past, have a grab a vada pav from the street vendor, sip a piping hot half cup tea (called a cutting chai) and smile with an overall feeling of great peace and tranquility.

The hustle and bustle of a overcrowded, polluted city like Mumbai, stress takes its toll and dulls human sensibilities. This article seeks to describe the situation and takes a humane view of the same.
