Preparing For Debate - Recognizing Fallacies In Arguments

June 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 117

Fallacy is the error in reasoning during an argument. When you debate on a topic, you would need to support every point you make with actual facts. If your reasoning does not have support your discussions could prove to be futile.

The fallacious arguments are usually classified as deductive or inductive. Although most of the fallacies are created in an unintentional manner there are others that are created with intent so that they can be used to deceive the audience into believing something that is not true.

5 Simple Ways To Recognizing Fallacies In Arguments

  1. It is important to recognize the various fallacies in arguments and avoid them in order to win the support and approval of the audience who are listening to the various points and counter points that are made in support of the case.
  2. The various common fallacies that need to be avoided include lack of evidence to support the claims that are been made. If you cannot provide any logical support to the points that are been discussed you will not be able validate your claims.
  3. When you cannot defend your position with facts and reasons, you might resort to attacking the opponent and this should be avoided. You will lose the support of the audience and will not be able to win their confidence.
  4. Arguments that are based on misconceptions and presumptions would make the entire exercise logically invalid. The fallacies can be both formal and informal. Most people see it as an attempt to divert the attention towards unrelated issues as they would not be able to support the claims that are been made with evidence.
  5. Sweeping or hasty generalization would need to be avoided. The issue that is been discussed will need to be addressed directly but the irrelevant conclusion will divert attention from it. Although the reasoning is not valid, it would be presented in such a way that it becomes a valid argument.

There are also instances where the relevant information could be ignored. Fallacy is against the norms of good reasoning and should be preferably avoided. There is a likelihood that you might persuade some people with the vague arguments but such persuasion would be weak.

It is advisable to refute the substance of the argument instead of attacking the source of the argument. The meaning of the word or term that is been discussed should not be changed as it can alter its meaning significantly.
