Advantages Of An Ethernet Connection Over Wireless Connection

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 239

There are many developments in information technology regarding the transfer of data and information from one computer to another. Computers can be interconnected using either a wireless connection or an ethernet connection. Despite wired networks having been invented first, they have some major advantages over their wireless counterparts.

Wired connections use ethernet cables to connect the computer to a router while wireless connections use some computer hardware such as wireless adapters to connect the computer to a router without any cable. Many desktop computers do not come with already installed wireless adapters but have the Ethernet port mostly located at the back side of the system unit. However many modern laptops have wireless adapters installed therefore need no configuration to connect to an existing network.

The security of data passing over a wired connection is higher as compared to that of a wireless network since it is quite easy to hack into an unsecured wireless network. This makes cables more secure and reliable while sending data unless they are vandalized. This is why you will find many network cables in many large organizations since these networks are easier to secure compared to their wired counterparts.

In a wireless connection, anyone with a wireless router can see your network and therefore can easily be hacked by unauthorized people. Other people can acquire the log in information to the network making it difficult to determine the authentic users. This is not the case for wired networks since for someone to access the network, they must have access to the router or to a cable which is easy to detect missing or damaged cables.

Another major advantage of network cables is the fact that they are faster in transferring data compared to any other form of network connections. This makes them the best suitable candidates for organizations in need of sending large amounts of data within a short period in a secure manner. Many firms would use wired connections to sent large files of data.

The connection that exists in cable networks is very reliable and it does not fluctuate. This is unlike wired connections which have fluctuating speeds making the sending of large files a major challenge. The transmission speed for data and information is very fast and not affected by radio waves and other signals. This makes it very reliable in a busy environment since there are no delays while transmissions are being sent.

It is much cheaper to use wired connection as opposed to a wireless connection since wired connections use locally available materials unlike wireless connections where these are commercially acquired at a high cost. Wireless network adapters and routers are quite expensive to buy and to configure. In a cable scenario, the user just plugs the cable to the port and is ready; it uses plug and play methodology.

The ease at which wired connections are set up is easier as compared to wireless connections whereby the router has to be configured to fit to the network. In many wired connections, the user plugs the cable to the LAN port and is now ready to transmit information or data within the network. Therefore no technical expertise is required in setting up a cable network.

As noted above, the decision on whether to use an ethernet connection or not lies with the user. This depends on the specific needs of the user, the speed required, the need to move the computer etc. Users are therefore advised to first do an analysis of their data requirements before committing to purchase their networking devices.
