Move That Stalled Relationship Forward

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

Times have changed. Because our society no longer frowns on couples living together before marriage, more and more young couples are skipping the wedding to set up housekeeping without making any future commitment at all.

To some, this may seem like an ideal arrangement. No real responsibility. Just move in together, share expenses, enjoy life, and move on to someone else when you get bored or have a difference of opinion.

This may work just fine for a few years, but what if children come along? What if one of the parties decides he or she wants the security a real commitment would bring?

Lately, I've noticed a lot of articles about how a woman should go about getting that ring on her finger. Most of them are wrong. Chasing a man until he gives in to shut you up, or issuing an ultimatum to get him to agree to a wedding date is not a good way to get a man or to keep him. And perish the thought of getting pregnant to force him into marriage. In most cases, the idea of becoming a father before he is ready will just cause him to run faster than ever---in the opposite direction.

The truth is that men, if they are honest, do want to get married just as much as women do. It's just that they have a harder time making up their minds so they come up with excuses like the following.

"I want to get married, but just not right now." "I'm not sure I'm good husband material.""I really love you, but there's plenty of time to talk about the future, later."

If your boyfriend fits into any of those categories, and you have decided that you are ready for a deeper commitment, here's a tip that I guarantee will help you.

Get to know the real person beneath the exterior your boyfriend presents to the world.

Most of us like to think we really care about the other people in our lives. In most cases, we do care deeply and do our best to help whenever we can. But, the truth is, that each of us is primarily interested in what is in it for us. (It being a relationship, an activity, a job, etc.)

I'd like you to do a little experiment for the next few weeks. Make a point of going out of your way to let the other person in your most important relationship know you care about him by forgetting yourself and giving him a chance to really communicate for a change.

Ask how his day went. If he had a problem, ask how he handled it. If it was serious, ask if it upset him. Ask if there is any way you can help.

Dale Carnegie wrote a book, quite a few years ago, called, How to Win Friends and Influence People. In it, he says that you will have more friends that you will know what to do with as soon as you convince them that you really care about them.

The same thing works in romantic relationships. Unless our partner senses that we really care deeply about what they think, what is happening to them, and what they have to say, we will never get to know the real person hiding deep inside them.

Try it, and see if that stalled relationship doesn't perk up and start moving in the direction you want it to move in right away.
