Street Party Insurance and Risks

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 190

Street parties in the UK have become very popular since the millennium and many communities, both urban and rural, regularly hold parties in the road, bringing all different members of the community together.

Once such example of street dining and entertainment is the regularly held Big Lunch event organised by the Eden Project on streets up and down the UK, now in its tenth year.

Over one million Britons attend a street party each year and with major events such as the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II the number participating and dancing in the street is expected to increase tenfold.

Depending upon your location and the type of housing that's surrounds your street or the effect that an event will have on policing and traffic, you may well need to apply for a special licence to hold a street party.

Check with your local council or county council website as to whether any restrictions or costs apply.

To organise a street party in your area you may need to fill in the residential street party information form, usually available online, and return it to your local council or authority

If you are thinking of celebrating the Queens Diamond Jubilee with a street party this June, you may well find that because of the Royal occasion, the usual administrative costs or restrictions have been waived.

Regardless of whether the party is licensed or not it is essential that organisers have the right levels of party insurance cover, for all the risks that the event may present. If licensing is required then it will likely be a condition of the licence that public liability insurance cover is in force.

Unfortunately parties and events where people enjoy themselves and may be off guard are especially prone to accidents and injuries.

The risks that occur at street party events are primarily the risks of damage or injury other people. This could be an accident that hurts a member of the public or guest or even a temporary employee. Such an event would leave the organiser liable to be sued for damages. To cover these risks special events party insurance always contains public liability insurance as the most basic cover with the option to add employers liability to cover employees and staff. Employers liability cover is a legal requirement of party organisers if you employ any people to help or organise, whether temporary, on a voluntary basis or not.

Aside from the liability risks most good party insurance policies will also contain the provision, for a small extra premium, to optionally add additional covers for property loss or damage and cancellation of the event. These optional extra covers are charged on a sliding premium scale and high indemnity or benefit levels can significantly increase the cost of a basic party insurance package. Similarly cancellation cover because of rain or pluvial insurance as it is known, will in most cases not be cost effective.

Many specialist events insurance brokers are able to offer online packages that specifically cater for street parties for less than a pound per head to cover. Shop around for deals and ask your neighbours and guests to contribute to the premium costs.
