Colon Cancer and Chemotherapy

Cancer is uncontrolled cell division causing problems to the body. Colon cancer is the cancer involving the large intestine. The treatment caries according to the stages. Some instances early surgical intervention with the combination of radiation and chemotherapy gives the patient a longer life. Therefore sometimes colon cancer chemotherapy is vital and can possibly be a solution.

Chemotherapy is otherwise regarded as chemical treatment where drugs are given to arrest or stop the cells from increasing and thus arrest the cancer. These drugs can trigger the hair to fall and this will soon reverse as our hair roots grow within a few months. Chemotherapy is typically taken up for phase 2, phase 3, and stage 4 colon cancer.

An Oncologist is the only physician who will administer chemotherapy. He will personally supervise each patient as it has to be given in a particular manner. Some of the drugs should not be exposed to light and the drug ought to be covered with carbon paper to administer, and the patient is generally kept in a dark room. Due to these medications the patient will have vomiting so it will be better to isolate then as it will be irritable for the patient undergoing chemotherapy.

Avastin is the drug usually given with all the other drugs for cancer. Adrucil interferes with the progress of cancer cells. Camptostar, Eloxatin, Erbitux, Leucovorin, Vectibix and Xeloda is used to combat the cancer cells. The combination will be decided by the oncologist. The course may vary and there may be many sitting downs. The chemotherapy will be done a few months away from each sitting. This is done for the drugs to act on the cancer cells, as well as give time for the patient to recoup his well being for the next sitting.

It is great struggling for the patient to undergo this therapy and it is just not chemotherapy, but a blend of surgery and radiation so the patient is definitely in need of support and consideration and patience. The harrowing time is terrible and patients are typically very worn out due to the side effects. There is much fatigue and exhaustion. Some side effects may be severe causing the patient to vomit and have flu like symptoms. They need to be provided with every kind of comfort and patients. You need to assist them in every way you can. Whether it be a car ride, help to the bathroom, or even with paying bills.
