The Myth of the "Old Dog" - Why You Can Learn At Any Age

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 146

If you're well into your thirties or forties, then going back to school is probably the furthest thing from the front of your mind. You might be well established in a career, have kids, work at a job you like, and be happy with your life in general. Why try to squeeze in extra hours of learning and study when everything's going well? Who says learning something new will benefit you, or that you even have the ability to learn at all.

There's a saying that we've all heard: you can't teach an old dog new tricks. This might be true for dogs, but it certainly isn't true for humans. We can do anything we put our mind to, no matter how old we are, as long as we are committed and dedicated to the idea and we let nothing stop us.

New Skills Are Worth Gaining

Going back to school is something that everyone can benefit from. It's not worth it to go back to studying just for its own sake-you need to have a goal in mind and a plan you're following. There are many things that you can study for the fun of it, or to start a new career, or to enhance your sense of personal worth, and all these things are worth it.

Many people are going back to school every year, and if you want to do so as well, then you have many options. You could go to a massage therapy school in MA or wherever you live, and learn something that is not only interesting, but also useful and valued as a professional skill. There are many other options out there besides massage therapy certification in MA-for example cooking schools, technical schools, art school, and many more-and any one that you find interesting can be worth your time and energy.

Fitting It In

Now, by the time you're older, you probably have a great many responsibilities on your plate and a great deal to worry about. It's not like you can just take off to college for a year or two and get your education started again. You need to fit these things into the cracks, and move things around to make time. Sometimes that will mean sacrificing one important thing for another, but you have to do this if you want to learn something new.

Affording It

If you've got bills enough to pay without the cost of classes to worry about, then that could discourage you from starting. But money should be the least of your concerns while you're also trying to study, and it can be if you simply choose one of a few options. First of all, you'll need to save up a bit, sometimes more and sometimes less depending on your school of choice. You may need to find some funding from another source, and government loans, grants, and general student aid can be found at With the money from these two sources, you should have no problem funding your education at any age.
