Skills You Learn While In College

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 273

There are some things that you learn in college that you will use for the rest of your life. Yet, they may not be things that you would learn from a class that you are taking. These life skills will help you when it's time for you to start your career, and even get a job. There are plenty of things that you can take away from the classroom besides the lessons that are on the syllabus.

You learn how to interact with different people. You may not actually think that when you are joining clubs and sororities or fraternities that you are actually learning something. You learn how to accept other people for who they are, and even how to be around people that you don't like. It's true that you will probably meet someone who you don't like, but you still have to interact with them on a day to day basis.

You find out how exactly you learn. In high school, you are kind of told how you learn, but in college, when you are given an assignment or are given a test, it is up to you to learn the material. People all learn in different ways. For people who find that going over and over the information until it sticks or you understand it, you might use flash cards to study. Some people may need to be quizzed by friends until the information has set in. There is no right or wrong way to learn.

Personal finances aren't something most college students think about, but you deal with the subject every day as a student. College is normally the first time for many people to be on their own. This means having to pay for their own groceries, gas, and rent. Some students even have to pay for their own tuition. So, you may not think about it, but you are learning a very valuable life skill when you decide you can't spend $20 on drinks because you need to get groceries later.

It doesn't matter if you have decided to get your degree online or are going after it in person; you are taught how to write properly. Sure, you may not be a History or English major, but that 10 page paper you just wrote is teaching you a very valuable skill. Being able to write well is a necessity with any career. One day you may have to write a 50 page report and then present it.

The presentations that you may give while in college also help you in your future career. Learning public speaking skills can make it easier to talk to your boss about that project you were working on, or even just talking to a group of colleagues. Who knows, your public speaking skills may be so wonderful that you can charm your way into the hearts of millions while running for president.

Choosing your major may sometimes seem difficult, but it doesn't matter which one you choose to learn these life skills. These skills can be taught inside and outside of a classroom. So, if you have chosen your major, be prepared to do some extra learning and embrace the new skills that you learn. Getting an education is important, and if you don't think you have time for it, you can always go to the best online college you can find; you will still learn these fantastic skills.
