Coffee Course - 7 Tips for Choosing a Course That Meets Your Needs

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 194

Have you ever dreamed of a career behind a coffee bar, working quickly, but with careful attention to detail, all while having interesting conversations with your clientele? Many people choose to be a barista because it is a nice escape from the desk job drudgery most of us are familiar with. These people enjoy being on their feet, creating coffee with such care and attention as to call it art, and generally love meeting new people and conversing with the locals. Many coffee professionals have traveled the world while working as barista.

If this seems like your calling, your first step will be to seek training through an accredited coffee course. There are a lot of options to choose from when selecting a certification method, but in general nothing beats a course that offers hands-on practice of techniques, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. Here are 7 tips for choosing a coffee course that meets your needs.

1. Select the Method that Works for You

Barista courses exist in a variety of formats. Coffee schools are by far the best option, since you have the opportunity to practice techniques under the guidance of a master artisan. However, there may not be a school nearby, and attendance may require you to stay in another city for a few days. Internet courses offer maximum convenience, but are generally not held in as high esteem as certificate from a school.

2. Look for Experienced Trainers

Your training courses should be taught by someone who has spent several years honing their craft. These veterans will have a wealth of knowledge to help you refine your technique, and network for jobs.

3. Learn About the Various Certifications Offered

The Barista Guild of America outlines three different certification levels. The first is attained after taking a one-day introductory course and passing your level one certification test. The second delves into advanced brewing methods, and the third teaches advanced espresso techniques and latte art. Most classes are one day each.

4. Interview the School

Give the school a phone call and see exactly what their protocol is for certifying their students. Ask what skills you will learn and how they will help you find a job.

5. Ask About Job Placement Services

Some schools will literally help you find a job after training. Once you have earned your certification, they will use their industry network to find a cafe that suits your taste in working environment.

6. Ask About Financing and Financial Aid

While the cost of attending coffee school is far from exorbitant, you may want some assistance while training to become a barista. Ask if the school near you offers financing options or scholarships to help ease the burden.

7. Decide How Far You Want to Go as a Barista

A barista's career is truly only limited by his or her imagination. If you are an ambitious coffee brewer, you may want to take advanced classes, or compete in competitions to brand yourself as a subject matter expert. Becoming fluent in another languages always makes you more marketable, as does seeking to learn everything you could possibly hope to know about coffee. If you love coffee, follow these steps to make a living from your passion.
