How to Set a Goal and Keep It - For Life

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 184

Every year, millions of people set goals on New Years and throughout the year only to fail or lose track after a few weeks. Despite the failures or disappointments, people still keep doing it but most of them only pay attention to goal setting and not the actual process of achieving what they listed.

Then there are those who don't bother with goal setting or any type of resolutions. Some people think it's just a silly hype for New Year. The next time someone tells you that goal setting is rubbish, don't believe them. Goal setting can work for anyone, it's just a matter of setting the right goals and learning how to follow through.

Ask yourself, how many times have you made a goal and fail to keep it? How many times have you promised to exercise, spend time with your family, work harder or switch jobs? If you're still not ready to give up, which I hope you are, then read up on these tips for goal setting.

Goal Setting Tips to Keep Your Goals for Life

  1. You've got to really, really want it-when goal setting, you should set targets that really matter to you. Your goals should give you the desire and excitement to do the hard work necessary to achieve them. To keep yourself from abandoning your resolution, you should only set goals that you really, really want to achieve. Make sure you're willing to lose sleep, work hard and sacrifice for these goals.
  2. Set specific, clear and actionable goals- I often see resolutions like "have more energy", "be patient", "have more time for myself" and other vague things. Lots of people fail in goal setting because their goals are not concrete or actionable. Instead of setting a goal to "have more energy", set something doable and specific like "exercise 3 times a week". In order for goal setting to work, you should be able to translate your goals into specific actions. That way, you'll know what to do and how to create a habit out of it.
  3. Put yourself under a contract. This is important to signify your seriousness with your goals and to make sure you remember them, along with the actions you're supposed to take to be successful. On your contract, I suggest you include the following:
  • A clear and specific summary of your goal(s)
  • Your motivations and reasons for wanting to achieve said goals
  • Things you're going to do to be successful
  • Sign your name on the contract and put it somewhere you can always see it.
  • Keep your goals simple. Last week, I spoke to a potential client who wanted to quit smoking, spend less, exercise weekly and get promoted. When he said this, I thought "Why not promote world peace, while you're at it?"
  • Multi-tasking is one of the worst enemies of goal setting. If you set too many goals, you're setting up yourself for an impossible challenge. You won't only lose focus on trying to achieve too much, you may also lose motivation because of the magnitude of your tasks. Keep things simple and set one goal at a time. When you've accomplished something, you can always move forward to your next goals.

Accomplishing things little by little minimizes the impact of the change you're trying to adapt, making your goals easier to keep. Eventually, things will seem easier for you and your goals will turn into your habits.

Don't wait for the next New Year to start on goal setting. Start working on these tips today! You'll be glad you did.
