Executive Coaching Vs Pastoral Coaching

February 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 328

Life coaching. Health coaching. Executive coaching. We hear about these areas of coaching more and more today. Coaching has become a profession that has taken on a life of its own and many in the field of consulting are becoming certified coaches to increase their effectiveness to corporate America.

Another area of coaching that is gaining notoriety is Christian coaching, with an emphasis on coaching pastors. Regardless of what type of coaching you attain, there are core competencies that must be acquired when effectively coaching executives, individual employees, teams or pastors.

The International Coaching Federation outlines basic coaching competencies as: setting the foundation, co-creating the relationship, communicating effectively and facilitating learning and results. Under the heading of communicating effectively, I add one more extremely important distinctive when distinguishing between coaching an executive and coaching a pastor - understanding the role of the bible and the role of prayer in the life of a pastor.

Unlike a corporate executive coach, a pastoral coach must take into consideration the role that prayer and the bible play in how a pastor functions and makes decisions. To not remember these as tools of the pastoral trade, neglects a holistic approach to pastoral coaching. They are a part of a pastor's belief and decision-making system.

A coach may ask how a client came about choosing their current profession. Unlike an executive, a pastor will tell you that he or she was 'called' to their position. Now, I do not mean, a phone rang, they picked it up and on the other end were offered a position. No, this type of calling is intangible, invisible - an inner 'knowing' from which the individual cannot run. Well, they can, but as many pastors will tell you, they are never satisfied in life until they answer that call. The actual call to a specific church is tangible - a call made by an appointed member of the selection committee, or the Deacon Board, offering the pastor a position.

As a coach, it is imperative to remember that it is not your role to convince a pastor if what they are reading in the bible is true or not, or even if it should be read. It is the role of the coach to assist the pastor in determining, if they choose to use the Bible, how it impacts their job and how they use it to make decisions. This is all done by asking powerful open-ended questions.

A pastoral coach like any other type of coach, is there to assist the pastor in determining what goals they would like to accomplish and how to creatively obtain those goals. Pastoral coaching recognizes that the answers to the questions raised by the coachee lie deep within. A pastoral coach is vital in bringing to the surface the unique gifting and talent your client has for accomplishing great things.
