Change Your Glasses, Change Your Beliefs

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

Essentially, for any real changes to be made, you've got to update who you think you are, you've got to accept that the 'truths' you believe about yourself are relative and malleable. Only when you accept a more flexible idea about yourself can real changes become possible. In fact, if you really change who you think you are, chances are changes will just happen naturally. If you're goal is to lose weight, I'm not saying that you won't have to diet or exercise, because you probably will. But the changes may seem natural, and may seem to happen by themselves because they are more aligned with the updated version of yourself. Does that make sense?

Once, when I was working as an English Teacher in South Korea, I knew this woman from Canada who wanted to see better. She looked into the latest laser procedures and discovered that South Korea had some of the most recent technology and plenty of knowledgeable doctors ready to perform this delicate procedure. She signed up, had it done, and came out with perfect vision! She was so happy, so excited to finally wake up and not have to squint to see the alarm clock. For a little while, she enjoyed the crystal clear life of 20/20 vision. But after about a month, slowly and then quickly, her vision began to blur. And after about another month, she was back to the same myopia she had lived with for years. Of course, there are a few possible explanations as to why this happened, but I maintain that she had such a strong image of herself as someone who wore glasses that she couldn't redefine herself as someone who had perfect vision.

Now, it may be that you have changed your ideas about yourself, but the changes failed anyway. What probably happened is that you changed the surface ideas about who you are, but not the core, the ones buried deeply upon the years of your life. What must people don't realize is that their minds are much more than what they normally assume it to be on a day-to-day basis. The vast majority of our behavior, beliefs, thoughts, and feelings are motivated by deeper parts of our mind, outside of our conscious awareness, commonly called the subconscious or the unconscious.

While I respect and believe that you may have taken great strides to change your ideas about yourself, it's quite possible that you didn't go far enough. In order for real, lasting changes to manifest in your life, you've got to make real, lasting changes to your identity at an unconscious level.

Often times, this can be the tricky part of any lasting change. How do you change a part of you that you can't even see? How do you catch that slippery fish? Well, the good news is that the more you pay attention to how you behave, how you speak, and how you think, the more your unconscious becomes conscious. The more of the unconscious that moves into the light of your attention, the more you'll have a choice in how to behave, speak, and think. For that weight loss to happen or to stop smoking, you've got to change some of your beliefs about the world and yourself. Your beliefs are the lens through which you see everything. If you modify the lens, you modify what you see!

A problem well stated is a problem half solved....but how do you go about figuring out the other half? To make any change, you've got to familiarize yourself with yourself. That's where it all begins and ends.
