Are You An Arrogant Coach Cloaking As a Caring Coaching Creative? Get Real, Really Soon!

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 183

Not long ago, I was talking with an 80-year old successful machining engineer who'd spent a good portion of his career teaching junior engineers and tool makers the ropes. At this point his mind is still fully engaged, quite sharp and perhaps much more alive than most of the under 30's I've met, and yes, I've met a good number of the cream of the crop in that generation as well. Having decent self-assessment skills, he's taken it upon himself to become a leadership/followership coach. That makes sense, and he definitely has the skills for a round-two in that regard. Okay so, let's talk.

You see, I've met many others who have also decided to become coaches, however there is a big difference between my 80-year old acquaintance and this next generation of coaches coming up - you see, many of the newer coaching types realize that they are self-motivated, more "turned on" so to speak in their life-experience than the rest of our population, and thus, they want to help all those un-motivated people out there. Makes sense right, unfortunately too many of these new coaches really think that they are better than everyone else, which would be fine - if they were. Unfortunately, most have never accomplished anything in their lives.

It would appear to me that if you want a solid mentor or coach, then you need someone who has actually accomplished something in their lives, not someone who is secretly arrogant but pretends not to be. No, there is nothing wrong with a solid ego, I have one in fact, however there is something wrong with an un-earned ego, parading around as a "caring coaching creative" type. It's just rather upsetting to me to see all of these so-called "coaches" entering this new "consulting" sector category who really don't know what they are doing, and to prove it, their resumes show little if any stick-to-it-ness or success in any industry, or endeavor whatsoever.

Further, there is no honor in faking that you actually care, taking someone's money, and embellishing your coaching ability. Does this mean I want you to hire me as your coach? Certainly not, I am not a coach or a mentor, and I'd have far too high of a bar or standard for potential students for me to take on followers or apprentices. Nevertheless, I can see a huge divide between the coaches out there, whether personal coaches, sports coaches, business coaches, or innovation and entrepreneurial consultants. I am alarmed and thought you ought to know. Please consider all this and think on it.
