Tips On Maintaining Your Upholstery

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 153

Living in these trying times has taught us to use things to the fullest. Waste in the American home has definitely been reduced significantly. By hanging onto things for as long as possible by maintaining them you are able to survive even the toughest of times. This includes your furniture. In earlier days many people would have replaced a sofa after a few years and bought something new as styles and trends changed. Nowadays, however, we have become much more conscious of waste and are opting to care for our furnishings so they stay nice and last longer.

How To Maintain Your Upholstery

Maintaining your furniture can be quite a challenge especially in a home that contains a few young children or pets. Spills create stains that over time can contribute to mold or mildew and pet dander and pet hair can destroy a sofa. While you love your children and pets keeping the furniture in good condition requires a regular routine. This is not a job for just anyone. When it comes to cleaning your upholstery, a professional cleaning service is always your best choice.

If you must do it yourself because of budget constraints it is always best to have all necessary items available before beginning a large project. To begin treating upholstery stains you will need a cleaning product designed specifically for upholstery. Treat the stain according to the manufacturer's instructions. To avoid having to use cleansers, if you treat the stain as it happens, you are reducing the capability of the stain to sink into the furniture. Dilute with water or vinegar, depending upon the type of stain and always blot the excess liquid off. Do not rub it off, it will only spread the stain rather than contain and remove it.

Just remember that there is no guarantee that the cleaner will work effectively the first time. If you need to reapply because the stain did not come out you now have the risk of not only changing the color of the fabric, but also creating pockets for mold and mildew to form. It is best to allow the area to dry completely before reapplying.

While the job can be done with the right equipment and supplies, doing the project on your own does not provide you with a guarantee. There is no recourse if something develops such as mold or mildew from the upholstery not being properly dried or a change in the color of the fabric. When you hire a professionalcarpet steamer, they are trained in cleaning upholstery and know which products work best for each situation.
