Sandstone Sealer and Maintenance 101

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 242

A quality sandstone sealer protects the sedimentary rock composed of cemented sand-sized particles of quartz silica, iron oxide or calcium carbonate. Common colors of sandstone are tan, yellow, red, grey, pink, brown, white and black, colors which typically identify where the sandstone is sourced. These colors are caused by the presence of iron oxide, manganese or glauconite. The cement that binds the particles of quartz and other minerals in sandstone is form after the deposition and the burial of the sandstone. Deposition occurs when for example sand or silica is no longer transported by wind or water because of the sheer weight of material above it. Over time this material is compacted forming sandstone.

Sandstone is considered the youngest of the quartz based stones giving each stone its different levels of porosity, permeability, hardness and strength. Thus sandstone can be soft that it can be carved or it can be hard that it is used to grind such as a grind stone. It has been used for countertops, walls, as stepping stones or walls, pavers, flooring or in pool decks. Although a stone, sandstone needs special care because of its porosity. Thus, using a sandstone sealer is important.

Penetrating sandstone sealers, also known as impregnators are thin liquid sealers that penetrate the surface of the sandstone. This type of sealer can be water or solvent based. Water based sealers are much easier to apply than solvent based thus it is preferred over the later aside from the fact that it doesn't emit any fumes. Penetrating sandstone sealer would block any contaminants such as water or any liquid from entering the stone but still allow it to expel any interior moisture. This will prevent stains from seeping into the surface which may damage the look of the sandstone. Sandstone requires resealing with the same type of sandstone sealer after a certain period of time to enhance its shine and polish and also to provide continuous protection.

To take care of sandstone there are generally basic steps to preserve and protect its beauty aside from applying sandstone sealers upon its installation. Spills should be cleaned up immediately to minimize staining or damage to the sandstone especially when the sealer used was the topical type of sandstone sealers which only coats and protects the surface. Do not place hot materials like hot pans directly on the surface of the sandstone, use mats instead. Kitchenware can scratch the surface of the sandstone thus it is best to use placemats under china, ceramic ware and silverware. Glasses should be placed on coaster especially when it contains wine, alcohol or citrus juices. Protect the bathroom vanity made of sandstone by placing toiletries like lotions and creams on a tray. And use area rugs and runners to protect sandstone floors.

Cleaners that contain acid such as grout or bathroom cleaners are not applicable when cleaning sandstone. This also includes vinegar, bleach and ammonia. Scouring pads and scouring powders can scratch the surface of the stone thus should also be avoided. Vacuum cleaners should be used with care with sandstone since metal parts or even the wheels can scratch the surface. If a cleanser is needed use a neutral type of cleanser or a cleanser made especially for stone since acid cleansers can damage or etch the finish of the sandstone sealer which may then require stripping and resealing of the stone.
