When in Rome: Souvenir Shopping Just for Fun

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 215

Just because you're booked in to a luxury hotel in Rome doesn't mean you're only planning to buy expensive paintings, antiques and designer clothes, right? Part of the fun of shopping is discovering wonderful finds in hidden shops at a fraction of the price they'd be selling for at the upscale department stores and boutiques!

Here are a few of the best-kept secrets for shopping in the Italian capital. Whether you only have a few hours or a few days while staying in your luxury hotel in Rome, they're sure to offer you a delightful diversion!

Religious articles. Rome being, well, Rome, there is no dearth of religious articles to bring back home to your family and friends, Catholic or otherwise. Whether as religious pieces or works of art, you'll find many of them in the stores close to St. Peter's Basilica or Via dei Cestari by the Pantheon. These sites are a great way to venture out from your luxury hotel in Rome to explore the landmarks of early Christianity and Catholicism. Salustri is one of the most highly recommended stores where the goods are of high quality.

Wood Carvings. Bartolucci's by the Pantheon offers amazing woodcrafts and top-quality handmade souvenirs at a wide range of prices, from a few Euros to a few hundred.

Paintings. It's hard to come back from a trip to Italy without bringing back a painting or two... or five, or more. Especially when paintings are available by the side of the road - creations of unknown artists that are working in practically the same circumstances and environment as the Old Masters! Take a walk beyond the foyer of your luxury hotel in Rome and head on over to Piazza Navona, where many art pieces, particularly oil paintings and watercolours, are on display. Chat up a few of the artists, and feel like a world-wise art patron as you buy a couple of paintings from them! Tip: watercolours, of course cost less [anywhere from 10-15 Euros per painting], while oil paintings can run up to the hundreds- but are well worth it.

Murano Glass. Along Corso di Renascimiento is a tiny shop where you will find the most wonderful jewellery pieces made of genuine Murano glass and 14-18k gold. Called Murano Piu, jewellery isn't the only thing on offer- they also have sculptures, lamps and the like. You will want to schedule your visit here as close as possible to the end of the day- when you're just about to head back to your luxury hotel in Rome-and ensure that you pack them in your shopping bags well.

Clothes and Shoes. Okay, they're not really souvenirs, but clothing and shoes are always good finds on any shopping trip. If you want well-made Italian fashion, without the outrageous prices often commanded by the top luxury brands, you'll want to visit the markets as well as the little boutiques and shops, particularly on Via dei Giubonarri and off Campo de Fiori. Be careful though, you may find yourself unable to head back without a bulging bag of fashion pieces for yourself - choosing just a few can be very hard!
