Undiscovered NYC: Corona Park

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

For those staying in New York central hotels, there are many well known landmarks and sights lying in wait. Thanks to movies and literature, songs and photographs, the city is probably more recognisable than any other on the planet. The main sights can become quickly overcrowded with tourists, and while most are worth seeing, you might want to spread your net a little further. Thanks to some natives of the Big Apple, we've selected some of the best undiscovered sights. So, if you're planning a trip, these are the places the locals think you should be visiting. It's worth bearing in mind though, if you're based in New York central hotels, you might have to travel a little further afield.

Flushing Meadows-Corona Park

This public park is well known to many around the world as being the site of the U.S. Open, one of tennis' Grand Slams. The park is a one-stop entertainment shop, and is well worth spending some time exploring. The park is situated in Queens, making it easy to reach from any of the many New York central hotels. If you head in that direction you'll find not only the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, but also the N.Y. Hall of Science, the Queens Museum of Art, the Queen Wildlife Centre, Citi Field, and the Queens Theatre.

Citi Field

This is the home of the Mets - the baseball team who have become part of NYC's psyche. While (27 time World Series winners) the Yankees have become a world-wide brand and one of the most recognisable names in sports, the Mets have had to put up with grinding away in the shadow of their more successful siblings, and their fans take no little pleasure in their reputation for stoicism. The Mets have managed to win the World Series on two occasions, but the last of these was in 1986. The team's home before moving to Corona Park was the famous Shea Stadium, where the deafening volume of the fans reputedly scared the Beatles out of touring forever.

The N.Y. Hall of Science

A little bit of history for those staying in New York central hotels, the Hall of Science occupied one of the last surviving structures from the 1964 World's Fair - the original reason for the building of the park. This is a great place to visit, offering a wide range of hands-on exhibits that bring to life the realms of science and technology. The only museum of its kind in the city, it was one of the world's first science museums and set the blue-print from which many others have borrowed.
