Travelling to Venice FAQs

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

Here are some sample answers to some of the more commonly asked questions about travelling to Venice, including the Venice airport boat service.

How far is it from arrivals to the Venice airport boat service?

Not too far - assuming that you're arriving at the main Marco Polo airport - say around 500 metres. From there, the craft will get you speedily into the city.

Do the boats go directly to the hotels?

It depends. Some boats may take you personally to a specified location but others may be a shared service dropping off at specified points. Keep in mind that not all hotels necessarily front onto a canal or waterside location.

Do you need to use water craft once you're in the city?

It depends upon where you're going and what your interests are, but water taxis or buses may be essential for some journeys apart from the Venice airport boat transfer. This is one of the great charms of this magnificent city - and of course, no visit to Venice would be entirely complete without a trip in a Gondola!

Is Venice really sinking?

This has been a hot topic of scientific debate for a long time but most sources conclude that it is. There are many reasons for this and the Italian government is taking steps to try and address some aspects of the problem, however, your visit is unlikely to be affected by this centuries-old problem.

Why is Venice sometimes called a Republic?

The country we call Italy is a relatively recent creation of the mid-19th century. Prior to that, many areas of Italy were independent city-states or regions. For centuries, Venice was one such and during parts of the middle ages was in fact a world power in its own right. The city is still sometimes affectionately known as "The Serene Republic" though it is now an integrated part of modern Italy.

Are transport prices regulated?

Italy is a democracy and operates under a free market economy - and that includes the water city of course. As such, prices may vary and are largely governed by competition. Having said that, the government and local authorities may regulate certain prices such as some local transport systems etc.

What are the Sestieres?

These are essentially ancient medieval divisions of the city into what are perhaps best thought of as 'neighbourhoods'. There are rivalries between these and they are represented in much art and local heraldry.

Are there beaches?

Yes! The Lido is essentially a huge beach, reachable by waterbus from the city itself. There are others that are less well known and which may be quieter.

Is the city busy?

The city is one of the world's major tourist attractions and in peak summer season it may indeed be busy. Some people say that the city is at its best out of season. Yet such thoughts are unlikely to bother you if you're a first-time visitor heading into the city on the Venice airport boat for the first time. You're likely to be too awe-struck to think about how busy it may or may not be!
