Top Towns Not to Be Missed on Menorca Holidays

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 120

While many people go on Menorca holidays to enjoy some relaxation and sunbathing on its many beaches, there are plenty of other things worth doing on the island too. For example there are lots of towns there that are frequently visited by tourists. Some of the top choices are listed below; how many will you visit?

Es Mercadal

This is strictly a village rather than a town, but it is no less charming for that. It is very near to the geographical centre of the island too, and not far from the Me-1. This means it is easy to access if you have booked your Menorca holidays and plan on making use of a hire car. You also have the advantage of being close to the island's highest point when you are in Es Mercadal, so do make a special trip to the nearby Mount Toro to scale its heights. The village also boasts some prehistoric finds so there is plenty to see and do here.

Sant Lluis

You will find Sant Lluis towards the south eastern corner of the island. The best way to explore this town is on foot if you have the time, but a car comes in handy if you are only here for a short while. Take the day to wander around the tiny shops and streets and head down to one of the beaches nearby to enjoy the relaxing sound of the sea there. Many people view Sant Lluis as a more traditional town, and the good news is that it is hard to get lost here, since the streets are in a grid formation.

If the grid design of Sant Lluis has left you wanting something a little different, make sure you spend a few hours in Alaior. All Menorca holidays should include a trip to this cheese making town, and it is steeped in history since it dates back to the very early 1300s. Expect to see Gothic style buildings and knots of streets winding their way around the town. Alaior has real Spanish style and many people on Menorca holidays cite this as their most favourite place to visit whilst on the island.

No tour of the island would be complete without mentioning Mahon. Also known by the name Mao, this is the capital and offers plenty for all visitors to enjoy, regardless of tastes and interests. Mahon has its own port and since it was once ruled by the British you will undoubtedly recognise some of the architecture here. Look out for Georgian style houses and sash windows for example. While there are bars and restaurants to enjoy by night, there are plenty of places to eat and drink during the day too. You can relax and watch the activity in the harbour and then go and explore the town itself. Watch for such historic buildings as the Town Hall, which was originally built in the 1630s.

Wherever you head to on the island, you will never be far from some of its best towns.
