Top Myths About Venice

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

As you're entering the city on the Venice airport boat, you just might hear the odd "informed" comment about the city. Some of these are rather less well informed than others. Here is a selection - and the appropriate correct facts.

The City Will Have Sunk Beneath the Waves in Another 50 Years

No, it won't! It is true that the city is submerging but the rate is slow (experts debate about how fast it is) and some argue that it can be reduced or possibly even stopped altogether.

Of course, this is not to trivialise the position and, even from the Venice airport boat, you may see examples of listing buildings. This is a serious problem.

Venice Was a Great Roman City Originally

No, it wasn't - at least in terms of how we normally regard Roman cities in the west of Europe. The traditional (and disputed) foundation date for the lagoon city is towards the end of the western Roman period. In fact, some believe that refugees from the collapsing Roman Empire in the west founded it. It became a powerful city in the medieval period.

The King of Venice Was Called the Doge

Unfortunately, it's no again! The Doge was a senior official of the Venetian Republic who was typically elected for life. They were never called 'King' and the position was not, strictly speaking, hereditary.

This City Once Ruled All of Italy

In fact, the city's land 'empire' was largely overseas and outside of Italy. This was built mainly for trade purposes. Lands were controlled in other parts of Italy, though in some cases this was through treaty and with the general, if grudging, agreement of some of the local people.

It never controlled the majority of Italy, though it was, for a period, arguably by far the most powerful city-state there.

The City Was Never Conquered

By contrast, Napoleon conquered the city in the late 18th century and thereby ended its very long history of independence. In its earlier history, it had acknowledged a largely notional allegiance to the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire based in Constantinople.

All Gondoliers Spontaneously Sing

Well, you can check that with the crew of your Venice airport boat service about their colleagues but don't count on it! There are many varied stories about how this idea came into being, with some attributing it to antiquity and some to as late as Hollywood and the 1920s!

Of course, to promote tourism, and if the mood and a gratuity are right, who knows what may happen?

Everything Here Is Expensive

No, that's not necessarily the case. This is a large and thriving city and not all areas of it are natural centres of tourism. Of course, as you might find in any of the great tourist centres of the world, prices in the most central and popular tourist spots may reflect the location you're in. If you are looking for reasonable prices for goods, food or services, look to go outside of the prime tourist spots. You may find that further information on this might be available where you board your Venice airport boat.
