Silicon Valley: Fun for the Entire Family

Silicon Valley, located in the southern region of San Francisco, is widely recognized as the computer technology hub of the U.S. if not the world. The areas name refers to the silicon used to make computer chips. While many visiting the area have experienced the pleasures that San Francisco has to offer, few consider Silicon Valley a vacation destination in and of itself. However, there are numerous activities, attractions and places of interest to visit that are not necessarily computer related.

Fun in and Around Silicon Valley for the Whole Family

There are a number of activities that will interest the entire family. While some are geared more towards older children, there are still plenty of things that will enchant younger children as well. Listed below are some examples of activities that families can enjoy together.

Ride Aboard a Zeppelin - Take a tour on a full size airship and view the vineyards, hamlets, colossal mansions and charming country side of Silicon Valley in addition to the headquarters of the technological world leaders including Google and Apple. Also view the Moffett Field Airship Hangars which are among the largest independent buildings in the world. Children older than three years are allowed to ride.

Bay View Charters - Experience the beauty of San Francisco Bay on a yacht cruise. Special options include dinner, sunset, and Christmas cruises. While these allow children, the most popular family cruise is a tour of the Navy Reserve Fleet. This trip travels around many of the boats moored there and provides an up close view of the Battleship Iowa with a narrated history.

Gilroy Gardens - Not your average amusement park this horticultural theme park excites children with activities related to such questions as what causes earth quakes and how do bees make honey? While taking a break from over 40 rides housed within the park, children can wander among plants that sing, animals made of colorful leaves and a giant tree that looks like a basket among other surprising forms of plant life.

Garrod Farm Stables - Enjoy a guided ride on horseback through vineyards, preserves and forests while taking in spectacular views of San Francisco Bay and the Santa Clara Valley from an elevation of 1000 feet. Riders must be at least 8 years old.

Redwood Canopy Tours - Take an quick paced trip along a zip-line 150 feet above the ground to get a unique view of the coastal Redwood Forrest Canopy. Children must be 10 years or older to participate.

Raging Waters - Cool off on a hot day with a visit to Northern California's largest water park. Offering something for everyone, the park includes speed slides, family raft rides a 350,000 gallon wave pool and interactive water playgrounds perfect for younger children.

NASA Ames Exploration Center - Located at the NASA Ames Research Center, this science museum includes interactive exhibits for all ages about various aspects of NASA, a theater showing films of different space exploration missions and displays of moon rocks, meteorites and other geological samples that are literally from out of this world. Great for all ages, this museum is free to the public.

Many visitors to California view Silicon Valley as strictly a business district filled with technology companies located in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area and fail to consider looking for family activities there. However, there are numerous attractions in the area that the entire family can enjoy. The list provided here is only a small sample of what's available for vacationing families in Silicon Valley. A quick computer search before your trip will uncover a number of other possibilities. Consider staying in the area as in addition to having its own interesting options to explore, Silicon Valley is convenient to other cities that are replete with family friendly fun.
