How to Beat the Heat In Dubai - 4 Popular Activities

April 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 83

Dubai is one of the most exotic locales in the world, and people from many parts of the world come here for both business and tourism. Over 80% of the population is made up of people born abroad, so the country must be doing something right!

Dubai offers a wide range of activities to enjoy with your family and children. However, one issue that all residents and visitors must deal with is the scorching heat throughout most of the year. The high temperatures in Dubai exceed what most foreigners are used to, so you should take the heat into account when planning your or your family's activities. The following are some activity suggestions for when staying cool is a priority:

1) Ski Resorts: Believe it or not, Dubai has ski resorts! With the heat being an ever-present factor, the powers-that-be decided to build indoor ski hills at various locations such as in The Mall of the Emirates. Artificial snow slides and snow containers add to the experience. They're a great place to cool down in the summer.

2) Water Parks: there are 2 popular options. The first is Wild Wadi Water Park.Located in Jumeirah Beach next to the world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel, this park features 30 rides and attractions and is themed after the Arabian folk hero Juha. As of this writing, tickets start at AED 215 for adults and AED 175 for children under 1.1 meters tall. The 2nd is Atlantis Water Park, located at the Atlantis Hotel, this complex features Dolphin Bay (swim with dolphins, from AED 790 to AED 1,450), Aquaventure (water slides, day pass AED 210 per adult), the Atlantis Dive Centre (learn to scuba dive, ticket prices not available), and the Lost Chambers (aquarium, AED 100 admission).

3) Go Shopping: All malls, hotels, restaurants and other buildings are equipped with ventilating systems that provide central cooling in summers and central heating in winters. Dubai is considered one of the world's shopping capitals, and Dubai Mall (currently the world largest shopping mall) is just one of approximately 68 huge shopping malls; 8 more are currently under construction.

4) If you're intent on exploring the outdoors in Dubai, you'll probably end up at one of the city's amazing beaches. There are many activities to consider here, such as swimming, jet skiing, wind surfing or even sailing. The most famous beach is probably Jumeirah Beach Park, a one-kilometer stretch of sand with cafes, toilets, showers and lifeguards.A lesser-known but still popular beach is Al-Mamzar Beach Park, where you can lay on the sand or rent an air-conditioned area with a barbeque. One note- at Al-Mamzar, Wednesday is classified as Family Day, which means no single males are allowed to enter.

Regardless of which activity you choose, you'll need to take precautionary measures to avoid serious medical problems such as sunstroke, heat exhaustion, dehydrations, etc. Many locals recommend doing the following:

  • Apply suntan lotion.Use high quality sun blockers to protect your skin from burning.
  • Drink fluids.Try to drink lots of fluids including juices, sodas, water, energy drinks etc. This helps in maintaining fluid balance in the body.
  • Dress lightly. Use cotton clothing. Avoid usage of any kind of heavy clothing.
  • Eat light foods. Use fresh vegetables, fruits and juices in your diet. This will help in keeping your body cool.
