Historic Sites In And Around Ventura

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 145

Ventura has a complex history ranging from Native American settlements to being involved in the Spanish Mexican War. Many historic sites have remained through the years as well as many more artifacts that have been preserved and kept in various museums in the area.

The San Buenaventura Mission is one of the oldest remaining buildings in Ventura and probably the most important as well. This historic site, which was originally built in 1782, can be found on East Main Street. While the mission was destroyed by a fire in the 1790s, it was slowly rebuilt until its completion in 1809. Today, you can explore the mission on a self-guided tour where you will see original statues and paintings that are over 250 years old. The San Buenaventura Mission is open for tours daily from 10am to 5pm. Services are also still held at the mission and you can join one any morning at 7:30am.

Another place to see historic artifacts is the Albinger Archaeological Museum located on East Main Street just east of the San Buenaventura Mission. Here, you will be able to see artifacts that date back to civilizations that existed as far back as 1600 B.C. You will also see the foundations of the original mission buildings and learn about the various cultures that made the area their home.

The Olivas Adobe Historical Park, located on Olivas Park Drive in Ventura, also offers a glimpse into the early history of the area. The adobe found here belong to Don Raymundo Olivas and was built in 1847. Each room of this well-restored adobe depicts the California rancho era with period furniture, decorations and objects used in daily life. Admission is free so be sure to add this to you list of must-sees when visiting Ventura.

For a trip back to another important period, visit China Alley located in the 200 block of East Main Street. From 1866 to 1923, this area of Ventura grew to include over 200 Chinese residents who settled in the area between Main Street and Santa Clara Steet as they made their living as farmers mostly, but also did construction work and other jobs such as becoming merchants or traders. While there is actually little left of the buildings in which these Chinese pioneers lived, there is a beautiful mural that depicts what the area looked like in its heyday.

To see a piece of more recent history, be sure to visit the San Buenaventura City Hall on Poli Street. This extravagant building was built in 1912 as a courthouse and features arched windows, beautiful columns and a terra cotta facade. Once inside the city hall building you will see Italian marble floors, stained glass domes and even some original signage. The San Buenaventura City Hall building is open for self-guided tours from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays only.

To see what life was like in the area during the early part of the 1900s, visit the Dudley House. This Victorian farm house was built in 1892 can be found on North Ashwood on the corner of Loma Vista, just north of Telegraph Road. This historic home serves as a living history museum and features furniture and decorations that the Dudley family once used. Tours of the home are given on the first Sunday of every month from 1 to 4 pm. During each open house music from the 1930s is played to help set the historic ambiance.

A scenic 30 minute drive southeast of Ventura will bring you to the Camarillo Ranch House, located on Camarillo Ranch Road in Camarillo. This historic site features a Queen Anne style Victorian home that was built in 1892 on the 10,000 acre Camarillo Ranch. The grounds also feature a stable which is home to the Camarillo White Horses. The 14-room home has been renovated and decorated to reflect what life was like during the Victorian era. Docents even dress and act the part. Tours are given on Wednesdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm and generally take about an hour to complete.
