Geneva's Top Sporting Events

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

In addition to being of financial, political, cultural, religious, and historical significance, Geneva is a favourite destination for skiers and fans of other winter sports due to its proximity to the Swiss Alps. Located only a few kilometres away from Geneva airport, taxi cabs provide safe and convenient transport to the city or to nearby areas. After all, unless one is experienced driving on mountain roads under at-times extreme weather, best to leave the driving to the experts! And there's no need to worry if you're planning on bringing your own equipment through Geneva airport, taxi drivers will be more than happy to help you with your luggage.

For the athletes of the world, this Swiss city is more than a skiing base, however. Each year, the city hosts various other sports events to pay tribute to the athletic spirit and foster international fraternity and competition. Listed below are interesting competitions and events held through the year in the 'Capital of Peace'.

The Geneva Marathon

The Geneva Marathon, also known as the Marathon for Unicef, is an annual foot race. Held every May, it draws about 5,500 participants each year. The marathon is composed of four races. The Marathon, the main event, covers more than 42,000 kilometres (26 miles) through stunning countryside and past historical landmarks; the Half Marathon (or Semi-Marathon) is run simultaneously with the main marathon, but is half the length; La Genevoise is a five kilometre race exclusively for women; and finally, the Junior Races are four races for children ages one to six years old. Based on their ages, the children will run from one kilometre to three kilometres under the guidance and supervision of race officials.

Cyclotour du Léman

Every May, more than 2,000 professional and amateur cyclists take part in the Cyclotour du Léman. This event is perfect for all fitness levels as there are several routes to choose from (60, 110 and 180 km) covering Geneva, Lausanne, and Evian. This event is so popular that some companies hold training trips for athletes who intend to participate. Many international athletes bring their own cycling equipment and, luckily, this is no problem. At Geneva airport, taxi transport and shuttle buses are available to assist travellers carrying bulky sports equipment.

The Supercross

Held every December at the Palexpo, the Supercross event is a jet-fuelled celebration of the motorcycling sport. It features thirty of the world's best motorcyclists challenging each other's skills in a contest of speed. In addition to the motorcycle races, the event offers an almost carnival experience, with live music, performers, food and drinks, and a light and sound show. Don't worry about overindulging though - because Palexpo is quite near Geneva airport, taxi services are readily available to bring you safely back to your hotel.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct. If you're looking for a Geneva airport taxi transfer, Shuttle Direct provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don't miss your car on your holiday abroad.
