Geneva - A Shopper's Paradise

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

Despite being named the 'Peace Capital', a visit to Geneva can be quite intense - what with being an international for finance, religion, diplomacy, humanitarian works, and international cooperation. The city is a favourite destination of tourists for various reasons, offering attractions of historical and cultural significance, as well as being destination for sports fans due to its proximity to the Swiss Alps and Geneva airport. Taxi service makes travel to and from various locations easy and convenient, ensuring nearly stress-free travel.

Truly, there a million reasons to visit this incredible city - one of which must be its place as a premier centre for fashion and manufacturing. And, as every experienced traveller knows, a vital (and, for some, the most important) part of travelling is the shopping. For many, the label "Swiss" is synonymous with world-class chocolates, cheese, Army knives, cuckoo clocks and precision watches; however, that's only scratching the surface when it comes to retail therapy. Because the city is located only a few kilometres away from Geneva airport, taxi cabs can take you directly to the heart of the city's shopping districts as soon as you land. The Rue du Rhone, which is home to a selection of designer boutiques and high-end department stores, is a great place to start.

Listed below are some other shopping destinations serious shoppers need to check out, offer something for every one, whether its bargain shopping at a flea market or for fashionistas who want only the latest in haute couture,

Globus Department Store

Globus Department Store, which has been operating in the country for more than 30 years, is likely to be one of your first stops as you come into the city from Geneva airport. Taxi drivers will tell you that the store is quite 'ritzy' and specialises in the 'finer things in life', which is quite impressive considering Swiss standards.

Carouge Market

Carouge Market has been held every Wednesday and Saturday on the Place du Marché since 1777. Amazing! This market offers fresh produce such as organic vegetables and fresh fish caught form Lake Geneva, as well as small shops that carry locally made products, both edible and non-edible. Be sure to get there early as it can get quite crowded.

Philippe Pascoët

Chocolate lovers, look no further. In a country already overflowing with great chocolate, Philippe Pascoët, a past winner of the Prix de l'Artisanat de Genève, will surely make your mouth water with his unusual confectionery - such as pralines and truffles infused with fresh thyme, basil, star anis, tobacco, tea, and saffron, among others. This chocolate shop can be found on the rue Saint-Placide, and is open every day except Sundays.

Parfumerie Theodora

Perfume is more than a luxurious indulgence; it captivates the senses and allows people a glance of your most hidden persona. This enchanting perfumery, located in Old Town, should be on everyone's itinerary. Parfumerie Theodora offers a wide selection of rare and prestigious perfumes that will definitely captivate you, and help you captivate others!

You could literally shop till you drop in this amazing city. Even better, with its easy accessibility you won't have to worry about having a lot more baggage as you head back to the Geneva airport. Taxi drivers in this Swiss paradise are used to tourists indulging - after all, who could resist?
