Family Friendly Activities In Ventura California

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 136

While there are lots of cities in California that might be more difficult to visit with children, Ventura isn't one of them. There is a wide variety of attractions and activities that the whole family can enjoy together.

Starting right in Ventura, take the whole family to visit Golf N Stuff, located on Walker Street just off the 101 Freeway. Here both children and adults can have fun playing miniature golf, racing go karts, playing laser tag, bumper boats and bumper cars. There is also an arcade full of games and a snack bar serving pizza, hot dogs, drinks and more.

There are also lots of parks where you can spend a quiet afternoon lounging or playing and even enjoy a picnic lunch. The Arroyo Verde Park offers 132 acres of land with 14 acres of open grass areas, barbeque pits, picnic areas, miles of hiking trails, two playgrounds and a nature center. This park can be found on Foothill Road just west of South Victoria Avenue and keep in mind that there is a $2 parking fee per hour ($5 maximum all day). Another fun way to enjoy the parks and historic sites is to take the family on a trip along the Ventura River Trail. This 6.3 mile trail meanders around town, by the sea shore and through natural habitats. There is also a 17 mile extension of the trail that can be explored by bicycle.

A short 30 minute drive north of Ventura will take you to Ojai, where there are several stables that provide guided horseback riding trips. These trips meander along trails in the Ojai valley just between the Los Padres National Forest and Lake Casitas. Some stables also offer riding lessons and horseback riding on the beach. Many also offer bicycle rentals, tennis courts, golf courses and lots more.

Gull Wings Children's Museum in Oxnard is just 20 minutes south of Ventura on West 4th Street. This museum of discovery was designed specifically for children and offers lots of fun hands-on exhibits and fun learning experiences for children aged two to 12. Some of the exhibits here include Coastal Conservation, Ventura History archaeology and a nature center. The Gull Wings Children's Museum is closed on Mondays, but open all other days from 10 am until 4 pm. Admission for adults is $6; children and seniors are both $5. Children under the age of 2 are free.

One of the best places to take your whole family fishing is the Channel Islands Sportsfishing, also located in Oxnard. This well-known fishing destination is also sometimes called CISCOs and can be found on Victoria Avenue in Channel Islands Harbor. Here you can choose a charter on one of 13 different boats and choose from a ½ day, ¾ day, full day, overnight, 1.5 day, 2 day or 3 day trip as well as twilight trips and whale watch trips. Channel Islands Sportsfishing is so family-friendly they offer special deals for children on various days so be sure to call and ask about them when planning your trip to the area.

For something a little more educational, but still entertaining, head up to Santa Barbara to visit the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum. The Maritime Museum can be found at the Santa Barbara Harbor on Harbor Way and features 8,000 square feet of exhibits which include both permanent and traveling exhibits. Some of the exhibits you might see include Goleta's Cannons, Boat Model Gallery, Loughead Seaplane, Survival at Sea, Commercial Fishing & Diving Technology and the Robert Keating Charting Exhibit.

While this museum focuses on the sea, it leans more toward human technological innovations; the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum focuses on the natural wildlife of the area both in the ocean and on land. The Natural History Museum can be found on Puesta del Sol, just past the Old Mission. Kids and adults will have fun here, exploring the natural history of the area, learning about the various wildlife and plant life that are native to the area as well as the human inhabitants that have developed over the years.
