Cheer Director Integrates Training to Make Cheerleaders Faster, Stronger and More Fit!

January 19, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

According to the La Jolla Light, CrossFit, an "inclusive" fitness program may help some La Jolla, CA cheerleaders become more physically fit than the players they're cheering for.

Chrisanna Northrup, a La Jolla, CA cheer coordinator, is a huge advocate for CrossFit. So much so, she actually decided to get certified as a CrossFit trainer, to share the benefits of CrossFit with others, specifically her cheerleaders.

After reading an article on how a Ramona soccer team's integration of CrossFit led to improvements in overall physical fitness and performance, Northrup had an epiphany - why not integrate CrossFit into her own cheer squad's workout routine?

The cheer coordinator, Northrup, comments, "...[Crossfit] carries over into whatever sport you do; you jump higher, you run faster, you're stronger."

Apparently, Northrup's cheerleaders have shown a positive response to the unique 20-minute strength and conditioning exercise program.

To get a better idea of what CrossFit consists of, our editors consulted their company's website, which describes the CrossFit philosophy as to be aimed towards delivering a program "...that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist."

The CrossFit site also contends its program to be, "the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide."

Unlike a number of other fitness plans that have a tendency to advocate "maxing out" and "competing against others", the CrossFit program focuses on individual achievement.

"It's not about competing against your teammates. Your teammates are there to support and to push you," she added.

The La Jolla cheerleaders' considerable success with the program does not seem surprising when considering the demanding nature of the program, itself. CrossFit is the dominant training program for law-enforcement agencies and competitive athletes.

With all the success these La Jolla cheerleaders have reportedly experienced after integrating CrossFit, don't be surprised if these sideline stars end up in far better shape than the athletes they're cheering for this season.
