Quest for Quiet Corporate Jets and Airliners Coming Into the Twenty First Century - The Race Is On

March 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

What if our future supersonic corporate jets didn't make loud sonic booms? If so, would they be allowed to fly faster than supersonic below 10,000 feet as they climbed out? Even if they weren't military, what if they were private business jets? If they didn't make a sonic boom, and they were cleared, why couldn't they go supersonic right away? Is it possible to create a corporate business jet which was supersonic, but hardly made any noise on takeoff? That would sure make folks happy who live around airports, and solve all the problems we have currently with noise abatement issues.

What would something like that be worth you ask? Quite a lot actually because many airports, many executive airports are not allowed to fly during certain hours because of the noise. But if these business jets didn't make any noise, they could take off early in the morning, or come back late at night. This makes the business jet even more valuable because there would be no restrictions on the usage during various times of the day in many US cities. Is any of this possible? I believe it's all possible, and I think we are going to solve all these problems within the next decade.

In fact, Flight Global had an interesting piece on this not long ago, it appears a Russian company is going to use some of that hand-me-down military transfer technology which they stole from the US decades ago, the same technology that NASA, USAF Research Lab, and those defense contracting companies working on black projects have released now. In the article titled; "Russia working on quiet supersonic business jet," by Stephen Trimble (Washington DC) posted on March 14, 2012 it stated;

"A major Russian aeronautical research agency has launched preliminary design work for a quiet supersonic business jet that could fly over populated areas. TsAGI will develop the design in partnership with several Russian companies, including Sukhoi and engine maker NPO Saturn. An official conceptual image of the aircraft shows it with a long, pointed nose and as many as four engines mounted on top of the aft fuselage. The aircraft also features twin vertical tails and long, thin wings."

Actually the design makes sense to me, I am okay with it. The only challenge I see in the design is the slow flying speed issues which also plagued the Concorde, SST, and other versions of supersonic aircraft of this type. Still, with new materials and better knowledge today, maybe it is possible to "Have it All" as they say - speed, safety, fuel efficiency, and quiet too!

Not long ago, I wrote a series of articles of potential strategies to make aircraft jet engine noise go away. We do have quite a bit knowledge in this realm, and much of it now has been released to the public. Therefore, I am quite certain in predicting that this problem is nearly conquered. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
