Chartering A Private Jet Vs Owning A Jet Card!

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 140

I often speak to people all the time who say they have a Jet Card. The first question I ask them is what are their typical routes that they are currently flying. The majority of them are flying typical routes that should be using charter instead of their Card. For example, if you fly TEB (New York) to ASE (Aspen) and have 12 or more people charter is more cost effective than your Jet Card. Even if you go for more than 3 days charter is the better way to go. I have a client who flies TEB-ASE-TEB round trip with an 8 day gap and has been using his Marquis Jet Card. He would typically pay $120k-$150k round trip using his G-IVSP card. He is currently paying between $14k-17k an hour. If he chartered instead he would be on a newer aircraft, with exact same safety ratings for a price between $84k-90k all in. And that way he would be saving 10 hours on his Card. The time to use your Jet Card is when your taking your Gulfstream from New York to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. Another example is Los Angeles to Las Vegas or Los Angeles to Aspen because 90% of charter operators charge a minimum of 2 hours per day to use the plane.

Last week I booked a trip with a client who is flying from SNA (John Wayne) to AGS (Augusta) for the masters. He also has a Marquis card and would be paying a minimum of $50k for the round trip. He has a Marquis Citation Excel card and pays an all in average of $8k-$8.5k which includes the hourly, fuel and tax. The flight time is 4 hours over and 5 back. At 9 hours he would pay a minimum on his Excel (54k) which would need a fuel stop from AGS-SNA anyway. He is chartering on this flight and will be paying $38k on a Hawker 1000 which is a lot bigger in the cabin and can do it non stop both ways. So right there there is $16k in savings.

As you can see the Marquis Card is perfect for trips under 2 hours to remote areas. If you use your Marquis Jet Card for trips like Florida to New York charter is more cost effective. I'm not saying get rid of your Jet Card, I'm just saying be smart with the Card and supplement it with charter.

People buy a Jet Card because they want a fixed hourly rate. That hourly rate is a lot higher than charter prices because the majority of people who have Jet Cards are doing one ways. For example if you typically fly from VNY-SFO for a week trip, Marquis would charge you 6k for that one way. A local charter operator would charge you about 6k, since its an hour up and an hour down and there's a two hour minimum. There are a few operators that charge only point to point and the majority of them are on the east coast.
