Change or Perish

March 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

We are living in a fast changing world. What is true today may not be true in five years, or next year, or even tomorrow. Unsuccessful people resist changes until it is too late, and may eventually get crushed by them, or completely perish. But successful people welcome change and new ideas, adapt to changes, and take advantage of the opportunities that they offer. Because they know that in this fast changing world, there are only two options: Change or Perish.

Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change." That was true about 150 years ago when he wrote it, and it is definitely true in our time, too.

Between 2001 and 2006, the real estate and construction business was very lucrative. Hundreds of thousands of people went into this business. Many of them earned a lot of money in a short time. Unfortunately, in 2008 the real estate market collapsed, and sadly, many people lost their life savings. Many real estate agents went out of business, and completely left the industry.

While everybody was struggling in the real estate market, I knew a young, 25-year-old realtor who was thriving in that business. While most realtors had a hard time accepting the fact that the real estate market had changed, this young realtor made himself an expert on short sales and foreclosures. He was able to contact banks and lending institutions and he had over 150 foreclosure listings. His signs were everywhere. While other realtors were still talking about the good old days and how easy it was to make money, this young man focused on the opportunity that the new change in the market was offering. And he became very successful because he adapted to the change.

On the opposite side is the Eastman Kodak Company - An American Icon - which was slow to react to the digital camera revolution, and almost perished. They said, "We are Kodak. Our pictures are in every home. We will never go out of business. We Will Live Forever. " Now, let me ask you this, when was the last time that you bought a roll of film? These days almost all cell phones have cameras. We can take a picture and send it instantly to the other side of the world. The market for rolls of film has gone. Kodak was slow to react to the change. Not only have they lost their supremacy in the camera business, they even filed for bankruptcy. Now they are fighting for their survival because they were slow to adapt to change.

Unsuccessful people resist changes, until it is too late, and finally may even get crushed by them, or completely perish. But successful people welcome change and new ideas. They know that if they are not alert in spotting change and new ideas, opportunities may slip through their fingers. When they see changes, they welcome them, and study the opportunity that they offer. Then, they jump on the bandwagon, enjoy the ride, and take themselves to the new frontier before their competition does. Because they know that in this fast changing world, there are only two options: Change or Perish.
