Training Options For Computer Aided Design Technicians

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

When it comes to starting a career in CAD technologies, there are a variety of different training options for computer aided design technicians. The problem that a lot of people run into is that they have trouble deciding which option is actually best suited for their current situation and future plans. Fortunately, by understanding what your options are, making this decision can be much easier. It is important to note that in order to choose the right training, you need to think about what field you want to specialize in.

Before you start looking at the training options for computer aided design technicians, take a minute to think about whether or not any specific industry or field of study sounds particularly interesting. From a big picture standpoint, there are two main areas of focus - engineering and design. This decision alone can go a long way in helping you determine a specialty that interests you. From there you can look into popular specific fields of study such as architectural design, general engineering, process piping specialization, and computer aided drafting.

To be eligible for entry level CAD positions there are two different training options for computer aided design technicians. Both options start out the same way. You will need a high school diploma and an associates degree at a minimum. Normally the associates degree teach you about the CAD field in general. Once you get your associates degree, you have several options. The first is to go right for your certification in a certain type of technology. For example, you can get certified with AutoCAD, which proves you competency with the program. Once certified, you can start searching for entry level positions.

The second training option for computer aided design technicians is to pursue your education further. Normally at this point, you will target a bachelors degree of some sort. You likely won't major in CAD technologies, but rather a specialty field such as industrial engineering, manufacturing, product design, or computer science. To make getting an entry level position even easier, it is a good idea to complete an apprenticeship while finishing your degree. It is very common for firms to hire students to was as an apprentice while they are still in school. An apprenticeship is different from an internship primarily because as an apprentice you will be getting much more hands-on experience and can have a solid portfolio by the time you graduate. From here, you would then become certified.

It is important to note that along with traditional post-secondary education, there are a growing number of online universities that will make it much easier to both get a degree and complete an apprenticeship simultaneously.

Overall, both CAD training options for computer aided design technicians are fairly similar. The big difference is whether or not you want to pursue a bachelors degree in a specific field of study and undertake an apprenticeship or get certified immediately after finishing your associates degree. Both options have proven to be viable, however it is important to note that if you opt not to get your bachelors degree, it will be more difficult to get into certain areas such as structural engineering and architecture as your career progresses.
