The ISO 22000 Certification Process Explained

June 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 231

ISO 22000 is the internationally recognised standard for food safety management as published by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). The ISO is made up of representatives from over 160 countries that come together to publish business quality standards for a range of industries and business sectors.

ISO 22000 was published back in 2005 as a further step towards quality that ISO 9001 alone. All ISO certifications have been designed to work together by following the same plan, do, check, act process. This means that any business with a ISO standard will be able to easily integrate ISO 22000 into their processes.

ISO 22000 for food safety management is not a complex standard to achieve. As with all ISO standards, there are three stages for achieving it.

Firstly there is the assessment stage. Here, a consultant from the certifying body you have chosen will come out to your business. They will want to speak with the person that knows the most about your current food safety processes whether that be your managing director or health and safety officer. This stage is not a test and there are no penalties if your processes are not quite at the right standard for ISO 22000. Your assessor will write up all of your food safety processes in order to identify any 'grey' areas that need to be reassessed before the certificate can be given.

The next stage is implementation. After your assessment, you will be given around 45 days, although you can ask for more, to make changes to the processes in the 'grey' areas. Many businesses like to delegate these responsibilities to a process lead or project manager so that they can oversee that all processes have been implemented and that they do not negatively affect your current procedures.

Finally, your assessor will visit you one last time. They will want to see evidence that you have corrected any 'grey' areas so that they can prove that you now have met the required standard. You will be presented with your certificate and your company handbook detailing the processes you should be following for an effective food safety management system. You will need a yearly check-up from your certification company so that they can be sure that your standards have not slipped in any way, but this audit will not be a lengthy process.

After you've achieved ISO 22000:2005 you can shout it out to the world using the logo on your website, marketing materials and even company branded vehicles. ISO 22000 is an internationally recognised standard which means that it is as important in all countries around the world as it is here in the UK.
