How The Internet Works With BGP

March 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 115

Sometimes it's amazing how the internet has evolved through the years, how we can communicate with each other through social networking sites from different geographical location round the world. The interconnection of networks has become too big and still growing that it has become impossible to control or managed all the routing of information by a single organization.

But, thank heavens; we still got real magicians (IETF) as the bushmen in remote Kenya will call them, who are there to pull trick on how to manage; at least in a way, the whole routing of information to most, if not all the corners of the earth.

One of the tricks they pulled was to divide up the internet or routing of information into collections of network which they called Autonomous Systems or AS for short. Then, these are controlled by different independent organizations or companies.

An autonomous system or AS is a set of networks managed and controlled by a single organization using a particular defined routing policy. Each of these ASes is identified by a unique number (ASN) for short, which is then controlled and registered on the internet.

This where Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)comes in. to enable these organizations to connect, communicate and route information among each other and their subs, they use BGP.

Now, we talked about Autonomous Systems - AS; one of the most common examples of an AS is the almighty ISP (Internet Service Providers e.g BT, Virgin, Sky etc). We all carry out our defined and undefined businesses online through an ISP, as we do this; we become part of the routing domain of that ISP. So, this ISP whose routing domain includes you and me and others with defined or undefined business connects directly or indirectly to the ISP for internet access. When you or me connects to these organization, we are indirectly using their autonomous system numbers - ASNs which is what BGP uses as a form of identification in routing information.

BGP Role in Communication.

Ok, Border Gateway Protocol - BGP belongs to a class of routing protocols called Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGP).When BGP runs between two peers in the same autonomous system (AS), it is referred to as Internal BGP (iBGP or Interior Border Gateway Protocol). When it runs between autonomous systems, it is called External BGP (eBGP or Exterior Border Gateway Protocol). These protocols are used to exchange routing information within or among autonomous systems. It's different from Interior Gateway Protocols like RIP, EIGRP and OSPF, which are used for routing within an organization. Most organization use different interior protocols within their networks, BGP being a complex protocol has a way of communicating between these other protocols.

In summary, it's used as a translator to ensure that routing information is translated successfully inside an autonomous system network. BGP is configured on a router that runs at the border of an AS, and these routers can be called border gateways or boundary routers. Their main job is to find the best path through the internet in other to exchange routing information to a destination.
