A Look At Cats Behavioral Problems

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 109

This article takes a look at the many different ways that a cat can behave and what these behavioral patterns really mean.

Early on in a cats life when they are still kittens there are very few things to analyse, but there are a few interesting quirks. At this stage a kitten tends to paddle its way across the floor. The kittens are completely dependent on their mother for milk and nutrition, and their mother nurses them at this point. Later on between 2 and 16 days the eyes will open and the kitten will see its new world. About this time(14 days) the teeth will start to come through.

From this point onwards physical motion starts to occur and the kitten learns to move and gain its own independence and develops the ability to right itself in the air if it loses balance or falls from an object.

There are two main factors at work in a kitten's behaviour which are the genes and environmental causes. The two combined make up the kitten's personality, this can be demonstrated in a litter of kittens who obviously have the same environmental conditions but have different personalities, which obviously relates more to the specific genes of the cat.

We now enter the period in a kitten's life known as the sensitive period Thisis the first couple of months, and is believed that during this time the social attitude of a fully grown cat can be developed. For example if the kitten is handled by many different humans at this juncture, it is likely that as an adult cat it will be more sociable and develop less cats behavioral problems as a result.

It is a fairly basic premise and statement, but the more the cat is interactive with other humans, and gets used to the loud behavior of children and being with other animals such as barking dogs, or other cats, then the better in general it will interact as an adult. Of course there are some habits, like a kitten in a litter that has to battle for its share of the food, and may become protective as an older cat when it comes to feeding time.

There are two main personality types when it comes to cats, and these will affect behavioral issues. The first type is excitable and reactive. You will see these cats bouncing off the walls and clawing at your sofa or the tree and hurtling after butterflies and birds. Basically one big ball of energy! The second type is slow and mellow, obviously a much better choice for the older owner, as you are less likely to get the sort of behavioral problems associated with the excitable cat, which may be too much stress for some people.

This concludes the initial article in the series. I hope you found it to be informative and interesting.
