January 26, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 72

Have you ever recorded your voice while voicing out your ideas? Did you listen to it again afterwards and then type it? If yes, then you have successfully transcribed your audio file. The word "transcribe" means making a written or typed copy of an audio record. The process of transcribing the dictated material is what we can transcription. Medical transcriptionists work in the same manner. They listen to the files given to them and then they type it. However, it is not that simple since they have to deal with different voices and accents. In addition, medical jargons are used which makes transcribing more complicated.

What audio files do Medical Transcriptionists describe? Medical transcriptionists type the audio recordings made by doctors and other health practitioners. You may be asked to transcribe medical correspondence and reports. Administrative materials may also be submitted to you for transcription.

Is it a difficult job? The answer is yes and no. It would be hard at first but you will eventually get the hang of it. Experienced transcriptionists are generally faster than beginners. First, they are already familiar with the terminologies. They don't need to constantly press the rewind button to listen to confusing terms. The second advantage of experienced transcriptionists is their ability to spot inconsistencies in the reports. Beginner transcriptionists don't have to worry since these are the things they will acquire while working. To make the job easier, you can buy a good quality headset and a foot pedal. The headset will help you in listening to the audio files. The transcription foot pedal, on the other hand, will help you become more efficient. Instead of using your hands to hit the rewind and play buttons, you can use your foot. This way, you never have to move your hands away from the keyboard.

So, now you are interested, right? Do you want to transcribe right now? Okay, not so fast! Did you graduate with a degree in biology, nursing or any health related course? If yes, then good for you! It would be easier for you to understand medical jargons. If your answer is no, you don't have to be sad. Medical Transcriptionists are actually required to undergo a medical transcription training. A lot of community colleges offer this program. You will be able to learn proper grammar, writing and medical terms.

Once you have proper training, it's time to look for a job. You can work for a company or become self-employed. Whatever path you choose, you'll be sure to earn a decent amount of money!
