What Do Medical Assistants Do Day to Day?

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 120

A medical assistant is a career in which you perform functions in a medical setting as needed by a physician or the facility that you work for. The functions that you perform will depend on the kind of place you work for and what they need the most assistance with on a day to day basis.

While pinning down an exact job description of a medical assistant can be hard, there are many things that all assistants may have to do. First and foremost, many medical assistants are the first person a patient will see when they enter the office. This means that most of their job functions are at the front of the house. This is useful on many levels, not just for the short term (helping the patients be directed to where they need to go), but also in the longer term, as if an assistant decides to work towards a promotion or a higher level of medicine at a later date, they will know how to work alongside patients so to make them feel as comfortable as they can, as they would have worked with them in a closer setting for many years previous.

Assistants will man the reception desk and greet and check in patients. They will also ensure that a patient's files have been pulled and that all information within the file is up to date. They will take payments and handle insurance forms and claims, and answer any questions the patient may have about procedures they are having done so to make the patient feel more at ease. They also will take the patient's vitals and record them on the chart. They will make sure that the patient is ready to see the doctor then they will alert the doctor that the patient is waiting on them. Some doctors may also ask that their medical assistants assist them with routine checkups, office procedures, and even some types of office surgeries and smaller theatre surgeries.

The level of care that you provide as a working assistant will depend on the type of doctor that you have, how big the place you work for is, and what care level your state allows you to give. Working as a medical assistant is a great job for you if you always want to be on your toes and have fun while helping people when they need it most.
