April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 174

Taking a job in therapy can be rewarding, both financially and mentally. Not only do you get a good salary for doing your job but more importantly you get to take home the satisfaction that you are helping other people to lead normal healthy lives.

There are several different areas of therapy that you can go in to but the 3 main ones are Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Language Pathology. All 3 require a certain level of education, training and specialised skills before you are able to take up a post in your chosen area.

It is worth bearing in mind that the decision to become a therapist of any description is not to be taken lightly. Any job in therapy, be it Physical, Occupational or Speech requires a high level of education and also you must have certain other skills to be able to carry out your job to the highest level.

For Physical Therapy jobs you must have a Bachelor's Degree and have completed certain other specific areas of coursework before you can apply for admission to take your Master's Degree. This can take between 2 and 5 years to complete.

Occupational Therapy jobs also require a Bachelor's Degree and specific coursework areas. You must also have completed voluntary work in the Occupational Therapy area before you can apply for admission to take a Master's Degree. The Masters will take around 2 years to complete.

Speech Language Pathologists require a Master's Degree, although a Bachelor's Degree is not necessary for this type of job. However, certain areas of coursework must be undertaken and again will take around 2 years to complete.

All Therapists are required to be licenced to practice. This is for your safety and peace of mind as well as for the people you will be working with. Physical Therapists are required to pass the National Physical Therapy exam, or similar, depending on which state you live in. For Occupational Therapy you are required to have a Degree from an accredited program and you must pass the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. Speech therapists are required to have a Master's Degree and supervised clinical experience before applying for a licence.

As well as having the required educational level there are several other skills that are a requirement for any job in therapy. You must be compassionate as you will be helping people with problems that range from mild to severe. You must be able to pay attention to detail, have excellent listening skills and interpersonal skills. You need to be able to communicate clearly both in speech and writing. For Physical Therapy jobs you must be physically fit and have a high level of stamina. And, above all, on all of these jobs you must have a very high degree of patience.

Salaries range from around $40,000 to over $100,000 depending on the level of experience you have. Anybody considering a job in one of these areas must be prepared for years of hard work and concentration before being able to take up a post but the end result will be a job worth waiting for.
