Emergency Care Certification - The applicant proof current first aid certification must be presented. Acceptable training includes the American Red Cross Emergency Response course; certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association as a Certified Athletic Trainer. The proof of completion of CPR certification and Emergency Care Certification should be also be submitted with the application.

Applicants also have to meet requirements for Option A or Option B in addition to meeting the CPR and Emergency Care Requirements.

Option A: Applicants require to present proof of 2,000 hours of direct patient care in the particular area in the last ten years. Out of which 25% (500) must have occurred within the recent three (3) years. Direct patient care must include activities in each of the elements of patient/client management applicable to the specialty area and included in the Description of Specialty Practice: Sports Physical Therapy (DSP).

Option B: The proof of successful completion of an APTA-credentialed post professional sports clinical residency is essential for the applicants to submit. Applicants who are enrolled in APTA-credentialed clinical residencies at present may apply for the specialist certification examination in the suitable specialty area before clinical residency is completed. These applicants will be approved to sit for the examination with the condition of meeting rest of the eligibility requirements, pending submission of evidence of successful completion of the APTA-credentialed clinical residency to APTA's Specialists Certification Program.

Specialized certification in sports physical therapy is offered by The American Physical Therapy Association's ABPTS. It is a must for applicants to show that they have CPR certification and have the knowledge of current first responder protocols. It is also essential for them to pass an examination in sports physical therapy and have experience in direct care. The Certification of the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties is valid for 10 years. Re-certification may be applied for by certified specialists as early as 3 years preceding their certification expiration date.
