Corporate Compliance: Constructing a Persuasive Argument

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 272

One of the most important linguistic skills we possess and use almost daily is the art of persuasion, and the most crucial element to conducting a persuasive argument is good communication skills. Whether you're trying to be persuasive through speech or in a written medium, without a strong strategy behind your point, you are unlikely to persuade anyone to your side of things. In order to construct a strong, persuasive argument and sway another person's way of thinking, there are a few key things you will need to be able to outline in the way you communicate.

To start with, your argument should open with a statement of purpose that is both clear and concise so that your audience knows right away exactly what it is you're trying to get across. Your argument will also need to address a few choice talking points which explain to the audience why following your advice is in their best interest, why you are the right person to see this through, why this or that is the answer to their problem, or any other questions that the audience may be thinking.

Always lead in with the biggest issue first and work down from there, keeping in mind that you don't rattle on too long and loose the audience's interest. Finally, close with a call to action from your audience. Having informed the audience of your intent, reiterate this point by making a direct request. Should your audience be unprepared to commit right away, be prepared to follow up having given them something to think about.

In order for these points to be effective, you will also need to anticipate any objections that may arise and plan on ways in which to counteract each one. This will require you to think like your audience and do a bit of research. Take into consideration what it is that's important to this individual, what motivates and drives them, then figure out a way to weave these issues into your argument. Also, find out what it is that may be making things unnecessarily difficult in this person's job and try to answer in what way your proposition will be able to alleviate this needless stress.

Make yourself aware of the most persuasive argument against your own and find an effective means of combating these counter arguments with further points in your favor. All of these factors, if properly addressed in your argument, should help to alleviate any doubts your audience may have, and appeal to their priorities in such a way that will sway their point of view to your way of thinking.

Keep in mind throughout this process that your ultimate goal is to break down any and all possible arguments that separate you from getting a yes. The more carefully you construct your argument, the more information you gather about your audience, the more ready you will be to tackle any opposition that may arise. Each situation is different, and for each subject and audience you will need to tailor your proposal to fit the needs of the moment, but so long as you follow these simple guidelines you should be able to get your desired response every time.
