Changes at Work - It Affects Us All: Four Tips for the Survivors

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

I've been affected lately by changes at work. Some of my colleagues will be laid off in a few weeks and we all feel it. You would think that I'd be happy that I wasn't told that my job was ending and I am, but somehow I feel the change happening, the morale being affected and the stress that others are experiencing.

This article is not so much for the person being laid off, but for those that are staying behind, the survivor. I will be a survivor, one that's been left behind and seemingly unaffected by the organisational change. I've written a few tips that will not only help me but will also help others who will go through similar things.

1. Keep breathing! I know that change is inevitable and that without change, things remain the same. This type of change is out of my control and so all I can do is keep breathing. It sounds simple enough, but breathing and meditation is one way to remain in the moment and to remain as calm as possible. I won't allow myself to get involved with the chaos, the panic, the fear. I know that these changes are out of my hands and the only thing I do have control over is my attitude towards the event, my being, and my actions.

2. Keep it simple! I love some of the sayings that I learned while attending some fellowships. During this time of change, I need to keep my life simple, my work life as well as my personal life. I need to remember that when I keep things simple I don't use up energy that could be wasted on negativity, worry, or anything that doesn't serve me.

3. Be supportive! I can be supportive to my coworkers and my manager. By being supportive and understanding, it helps me keep positive with the changes. My work environment doesn't need negativity right now. It requires strength, support, understanding and patience. We've gone through changes before, and while it may have been difficult, we grew as a stronger and more cohesive team. I need to remember that with a positive and supportive attitude, all will be well.

4. Stay calm. My initial reaction is to look for other work. I know others are looking because they feel insecure in their jobs, and so do I, but I must trust that when my manager told me that my job was safe, that she was being honest with me. I'll stay calm, won't panic, and will be receptive to new experiences, should they present themselves to me.
