Navigating Your Mid-Career Transition

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 129

You've had your light bulb moment. You have finally figured out what you want to be when you grow-up! You are diving into it head first, devouring your training, making plans and taking action. Nothing has ever excited you so much. You're in your creative flow, there's nothing stopping you!

Wake up daydreamer! It's Monday morning and you're back in your "day job" again. Weighed down by the challenges of keeping a paycheck coming in and trying to balance what you love with what you're moving away from. Stuck in the in-between, the transition phase, the one last step that's keeping you from diving full-time into your passion.

For many mid-career changers, this is the reality of finally pursuing your passion. Spending those last few months (or years) in your old career can be one of the most frustrating, demotivating experiences of making the transition. Fortunately, there are a few tips for keeping your sanity until you're finally able to make the cut.

5 Tips for Staying Sane During a Mid-Career Transition

1. Money Talks! - Most mid-career changers stay in their current positions so that they can put themselves in a financial position to make the transition with ease. What are you currently funding by staying in your job? You could be investing more into your 401K, keeping your health insurance benefits, socking away money into savings or paying off your start-up expenses. Whatever your money motivation, keep this in the forefront of your thoughts each day. Viewing your current position as a launch pad for your future is a great way to stay motivated.

2. A Job Worth Doing is Worth Doing Well - The temptation may be to start slacking off in your current job. After all, you need all of your energy, attention and focus on your dream career, right? Wrong. There's no rule that says you can't do both well and the fact is, you will feel better about yourself if you do. Slacking off doesn't do anyone any good. You end up feeling bad about your job performance, which can block your creative flow and stop you in your tracks of your dream endeavor. If your motivation is lagging, just refer back to your reasons for staying in #1.

3. Carve Out Time - Set aside blocks of uninterrupted time to work on your new career. Schedule an hour each morning before your current job, use your lunch breaks, spend some time before bed each night. Make sure you have this time built into your day so that you have it to look forward to.

4. Attitude of Gratitude - Appreciate the fact that you are still employed while having this incredible opportunity to step into something you love. The pressure is off to start generating income immediately. You can pace yourself and build a strong foundation for your dream career.

5. It Doesn't Last Forever - The transition phase is just that - a phase. Soon this time will be behind you. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep planning and taking action and before you know it, that letter of resignation will be turned in and you'll be entering a whole new world. A world created by you to be true to who you are and share your gifts. Isn't that the best motivation of all?
