How Long Does It Take To Become A Veterinarian?

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 129

Some people would think that Veterinary Medicine is just a technical course anybody could take. That seems to be frustrating (especially to those practicing veterinarians), since Veterinary Medicine is similar to Medicine, and even has a diversified curriculum compared to the latter because of the wide range of species it aims to study and attend to.

If you are interested in taking up the said course, and have been contemplating that serving animals is your calling, then better be acquainted on how long you'd stay aboard before you become a real practitioner, a full-fledged veterinarian.

Before you enter Veterinary Medicine per se, you have to take the prerequisites first. For some schools, they require four (4) years in college. But some institutions are different, having three (3) years is enough as long as you are with completed prerequisites, and grades are, of course, according to academic standards. After you are done with the prerequisites, you may now proceed to Veterinary Medicine and spend another four (4) years. Four years of having numerous subjects to study and laboratory work to attend to. Then after taking up proper Veterinary Medicine, you may move on to have residency credits or internship, which may run for a minimum of two (2) years. Internship is not required but it is offered. Well, if you plan to have advanced qualifications or specialty certifications, then you better include the two years of internship or credits in the count. For foreign graduates, it is recently required of them to have additional veterinary medical residency credits, although this is still in debate.

Once you finish vet school, you still can't practice your skills and put to scale your knowledge immediately --- you need to pass the examinations this time. There is this national veterinary medical board exam, similar to the bar exam in law, that you need to get and pass. Then in order to practice in a state, you also need to pass a state board exam. Each state has set their own requirements, which means that they have their own state board exams. When you plan to practice from one state then to another, review their requirements --- some may not require you another state board exam only if the other state accepts the scores, things they have to consider, or let you take another board examination. And remember, before you practice, take oath first.

As you move on to becoming a competent veterinary practitioner, you must be certain to take into consideration the idea that need to get continuing education courses since trends nowadays are really changing fast, especially with animal healthcare. This allows you to keep track, be updated of the different techniques, new and modified ones, ideas and recent diseases.

Four (4) years in college plus four (4) years in Veterinary Medicine, plus two (2) years of internship, plus a year of review and taking board examinations, plus your continuing education classes, you'll be having more or less eleven (11) years in the making (well, the basic is eight (8) but to become the full-fledged and competent veterinary practitioner that you dream to be, then start counting till eleven)!
