April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 101

If you are seeking a rewarding career in home sustainability industry, now is a great time to become an energy auditor. According to a recent OES survey, an auditor (also known as rater or consultant) is listed as a new and emerging occupation. Amid a rising demand for cost-efficient services and the government push for environmental sustainability, the opportunities for this profession will continue to raise.

What is an energy auditor/rater?

Home rater is an expert who evaluates homes against efficiency, health, and safety criteria in order to identify fields for improvement. To identify possibilities for increased efficiency, safety and comfort of the building, the expert must collect empirical data, perform tests and use a special software. Normally, the expert produces a report with findings and recommendations.

How much do raters earn?

Being a new and emerging occupation, wage data for this profession are not currently listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). According to one unofficial source the average salary for this profession is $60,000 per annum.

Do I need a college degree to pursue this career?

No! You might pursue the career even without attending a college.

How do I get good credentials?

The first requirement is to obtain the proper education. There are several different paths that can lead to certification. Importantly, there are no nationwide education requirements for this profession even though certain states require certification. Thus, it is always a good idea to ascertain what training and professional designations your state programs require. In the absence of a single training requirement, there exist many programs that serve their participants by providing them with credentials.

What kind of training should I get?

As pointed out above, there exist no unified nationwide educational requirements. Thus, training in this field is quite diverse. As a minimum, you will learn the fundamentals of energy: flows, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, heat gain and loss, insulation and water conservation. You will also need to get a field training that include home inspection techniques. There are several training programs (including online programs) that can help you learn those skills.

What are the leading nationwide certification bodies?

BPI, RESNET and AEE are some of the leading nationwide certification bodies.

What kind of equipment do I need to perform audits and how much does it cost?

• Gas leak detector - $140

• A blower door - $2,300 - $4,100

• Ambient CO monitor - $140

• Combustion analyzer - $1,100
