Car Washing Tips and Tricks

It is best if you can wash your vehicle in a space were you are out of the sun but most folks I know do not have a drain in their garage. If you have to do it outside like I do an overcast day with not a lot of sun is best. If the day is going to be bright and sunny try for the early morning or the late afternoon after the heat of the day.

Before I get started I will get out all of my buckets, car wash, wheel cleaner, wheel brush, tire dressing, quick detailer, grit guard insert, degreaser and hose. I will make sure that I have enough hose to reach all the way around the vehicle with little effort.

Now it is time to get started the first this is to make sure the vehicle is cool. I will spray on my degreaser in the wheel well then hit the wheel with wheel cleaner. I will do this for all four wheels. By the time I finish the last one with putting on the cleaner, I pick up my wheel brush and give the wheel wells a quick brushing. Then I rinse off the brush and give the wheel a scrub. Now it is time to rinse everything off well and start on the next wheel until all four are complete. With the wheels done I move on to washing the vehicle.

I will start by grabbing two five gallon buckets in one I will place my grit guard and the other will get the car soap. Both will get filled about half way with water. Then I will start by giving my vehicle a good rinse down. I will use either a wash mitt or sponge. The first dip is into the bucket with the soap and I will start with the top of the vehicle and work my way down. Once I have stretched the soap as far as I can I will rinse the sponge in the clean water bucket against the grit guard to make sure the sponge is clean. I will the get more soap and continue until the panel is compete. After each panel is washed, I rinse that panel off until no soap is left. The way I work the car is roof, front and rear window, hood, top of trunk, front quarter panel, door and windows, rear quarter panel, and finally the front and back of the vehicle. Depending on how dirty the vehicle is I will be watching the rinse water and changing it when the water gets too dirty.

Finally I am ready to dry the vehicle. I like to use a small blower that will filter and heat the air to dry the vehicle with. I will start around all the door handles, tail lights, marker lights, trim, lug nuts, panel gaps, mirrors, and head lights. Once these areas are complete then I will dry the vehicle from the top down. After this I will get a waffle weave microfiber towel to get any remaining water that is on the surface. Now if you do not have a blower take two waffle weave microfiber towels and use one to move off as much water as you can. Then come right behind it with the other towel to capture any remaining water. Depending on the size of the vehicle you may need two or three sets of towels. Once the body is dry I open the doors, trunk and hood to wipe down any water out of the jambs. Then I will clean the glass both on the inside and outside.

Now it is time for a quick wipe down with some quick detailer, a little tire dressing, and depending on how the wheels look possibly a little wheel wax. That would be how I would wash my vehicles. If I wanted to move along in the process then I would be getting ready for polishing but that will be for another time.
