The Backpacking Experience

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 150

Hiking is an amazing experience and it becomes even more pleasurable if you have the necessary supplies with you. Now since this term "necessary" is relative, people interpret it in different ways. Some people emphasize the importance of basic necessities for survival, such as water and food, while others stretch its implications to as far as folding sun shades and chairs.

One important aim of backpacking is to keep the load as light as possible. Often people find themselves on the fence when deciding which items to put in your backpack. In the search to find a decent balance between weight and utility, tradeoffs are commonplace. Some may decide to carry additional items that might come in handy while others decide on less even when staying long days in the back woods.

Carrying a backpacking stove has always been a matter of debate among hikers. Some argue that since a campfire is sufficient enough for heating and cooking purposes, backpacking stoves tend to consume space and add to the already drooping backpacks. Others believe that carrying a single burner stove or a canister stove is really useful and simplifies the cooking experience.

Single burner stoves, canister stoves and liquid fuel stoves all have their own advantages. Single burner stoves are light but they are not quite as powerful as their 2 or 3 burner big brothers. Meals require more time to cook, however they are famous for being compact and lightweight. Canister stoves use gas-powered burners to provide the most efficient cooking experiences. Although, these are comparatively heavier, they have one advantage: canisters are easy to carry because the fuel canister can be carried in your backpack separately from the stove. Liquid fuel stoves are powered by a variety of fuels including white gas, kerosene or diesel fuel and are preferred by some because of their versatility, size and weight.

Those people planning for hiking often choose single burner stoves of the canister or liquid fuel type as they provide a fair balance between convenience and power. These stoves hardly make you feel their presence in a backpack as their designs permit them to be as lightweight and compact as possible. Single burner stoves are built in compact sizes so that they can easily fit in your bag. This allows hikers with culinary inclinations and more sophisticated tastes a much better alternative than using a campfire where the level of effort required in cooking is much higher.

The load carried on one's back is the most important concern for every hiker. These backpacking experiences often involve traveling several miles on foot. A lightweight backpack will ensure that the journey is convenient and pleasurable. You don't have to make stops every few minutes and you can more fully enjoy your adventure. An appropriately weighed backpack also reduces the likelihood of injury and post-excursion fatigue, which again have a significant impact on the overall hiking experience.

Hiking means different things to different people and the accessories required correspond to the goals of the journey as well as the style of the hiker. Some people enjoy campfires others enjoy cooking on a camp stove, some enjoy fishing or horse riding while others like exploring undiscovered regions. The types of activities you plan will form the basis for the equipment you will take on your backpacking adventure.
