Preparing Your Child for Summer Camp

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

Going away to summer camp can be one of the best ways to make the most of school vacation, but it can also be a major step for children of all ages. For many boys and girls, going to summer camp may mean spending time away from home for the first time. With this often comes homesickness, which is to be expected for any child who has never been separated from his or her parents before.

Homesickness to a certain degree is only natural and is something that children must get past rather than get over. To help them do this, there are many different things that parents can do prior to sending their son or daughter off to summer camp.

Depending on the individual boy or girl, there may be specific things that can be done that can prove helpful. This is especially true if there are certain things that make the child comfortable or ease their fears.

One of the most important steps is to allow your son or daughter to practice being away from the comforts of home and from being with mom and dad. This is something that many families already do, either intentionally or unintentionally, by sending their kids to stay with grandparents, other relatives, or even friends. Regardless of whether this is something you already do, starting or continuing to do this around the time when the child will be going away can help prepare him or her for being out of the house.

While children will have to make their own way without their parents, having regular forms of communication with them can help ease the burden. Because you can never guarantee that a specific summer camp will have a phone that kids will be able and allowed to use, the practice of letter writing can be helpful to allow your children the chance to reach out to home.

Before he or she goes away, practice writing letters and discuss what you will talk about. This will provide the boy or girl with a forum to discuss his or her feelings and also share accomplishments and happy moments from the experience.

Finally, it can help your kids to understand that summer camp will not go on forever, and that they will only be away from home for a certain period of time. Help to drive this point home by showing them on a calendar when it will start, as well as the day you will pick them up. You can also consider allowing them to take this with them to help them understand how long they have remaining with their new friends.
