Who Wants To Paint Some Kitchen Cabinets?

April 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 157

Home improvement projects are so popular that at one time, there was a TV show named after them! While most projects are not quite as amusing as the show portrayed, they can be quite fun with the proper preparation and know-how. Many people in older houses find themselves wanting an "updated" look in their kitchens. Houses from the '70s tend to have darker earthy tones, and the kitchens usually leave a bit to be desired when it comes to light. While it's always an option to replace your kitchen cabinets, a great (and much less expensive) alternative is to repaint the cabinets. Now this is no easy task, and if you are not home improvement oriented, you may want to consult a professional. However, I will provide you with some tips if you want to take it upon yourself bring a different look to your kitchen.

First of all, you have to be prepared. You want to start by removing anything that could be in the way. If you are painting the insides of the cabinets as well, then yes, you want to take everything out. You will want to take the doors off, including the hinges. You will want to clean the cabinets like you've never cleaned them before! You may want to use some safe chemicals if they are really dirty (something like tri-sodium phosphate). You will want to mask off everything in the area. Seal off the room and floor entirely to ensure that you contain your mess without affecting any other rooms. Before you start with any painting, you will want to thoroughly sand and dust all of the cabinets. Now onto the painting!

It is recommended, in order to maintain a consistent level of paint across the surfaces, that you use a spray painting method. Not to mention it's MUCH less elbow grease involved... You will want to start with a primer coating. This is generally recommended for most any painting jobs. It gives a smooth and consistent base for whatever color you choose to paint your cabinets. You will want to sand and dust the cabinets again before you move on to the next painting portion. Ideally, you will apply a mix of primer and finish in order to smoothly move into the final application. All of this will ensure a more consistent finish in the end. Once this is dried, you will, for the last time, want to sand and dust off the cabinet doors. And on to the final step! EVENLY spray on your final coat in whatever color you choose. Lighter colors are more popular these days, and they can be especially welcome in kitchens with less natural light. Once this is finished, obviously you will let them dry. Now, if you have certain doors that will be handled more often, you may choose to apply one more coat of paint just to give the finish a little more durability. You may thank yourself later on for doing this.

Now that you've gotten through this, you're at the cleanup phase. Carefully remove all of your protective measures and any mess that you've made. You will want to make sure you have cleaned all those little sports that you cannot normally reach, and don't forget the hinges! Now it's time to put your beautiful new cabinets up! It's amazing what a new, lighter color will do for the overall mood of your kitchen. Most likely, you'll want to invite over some guests to see your handiwork!

I hope this was somewhat helpful, and please stay tuned for more articles about kitchen cabinets.
