Considerations to Make Before Installing a Medicine Cabinet

March 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 246

A medicine cabinet is an ideal addition to any bathroom. Just think of all those toothbrushes, toothpastes, lotions and various types of soap all cluttered around your basin, a medicine cabinet is the perfect piece of furniture for conveniently storing all of that mess away and out of sight. Plus their appeal isn't just down to their storage space, as you house your medicine cabinet above the sink it acts as an attractive centre piece to any bathroom. To top off the look of your bathroom, here are a few considerations to make prior to installing your new cabinet.

The first area you need to consider is how stable the walls of your bathroom walls are. Although a wall-mounted cabinet will have structural support such as a metal hanging frame, as bathroom cabinets are quite heavy due to their size, you want to make sure your bathroom walls are strong and sturdy enough to support your new medicine cabinet. If you have any doubt about the sturdiness of your bathroom wall, you should always consult with a contractor or expert prior to fitting the cabinet as failure to do so could result in a DIY accident later on.

To make sure you are able to fit the cabinet yourself, the unit will be supplied with the manufacturers fitting instructions. Instructions are useful as they will detail how you can fit the unit yourself. Although, it is important to remember that if you find any difficulty in deciphering the instructions then it would be a better idea to ask someone else to fit the unit for you to avoid badly fitting the cabinet.

Once you have assessed the strength of the walls of your bathroom and are ready to fit your cabinet then the next decision you have to make is the location of where you want to fit the cabinet. Although, it is likely you will want to store it above your basin, you want to make sure that there are no obstructions on either side of where you would like to install the cabinet as this could prevent the cabinet's doors from opening easily. Therefore it is vital that there is enough room around the cabinet for the doors to open freely - this consideration is particularly relevant for cabinets which have drawers that may slide open to the side of the unit.

If you feel comfortable in fitting the unit yourself, then you need to make sure that the cabinet is level when you fix it to the wall. To do this, it is advisable to ensure you have a spirit level and are aware of how to use it as having a medicine cabinet that is not level could result in a DIY disaster as products inside the cabinet could tip over or in the worst case scenario the cabinet could fall off the wall.

Thorough care and consideration will mean you will install your medicine cabinet safely and correctly. A second person can always help you fit the cabinet or alternatively you can pay for a contractor to do the job for you if you have any doubt.
